Before an officer draws a full salary, they go through pre-commission training. During this period, cadets are paid a fixed monthly stipend rather than a regular salary. Currently, the stipend stands at ₹56,100 per month for the entire training duration. Once a cadet is commissioned as an officer, their pay is fixed at the first cell of Level 10, and the training period is not counted as commissioned service. Any arrears on eligible allowances for the training period are settled once the officer starts formal service.
The Officers Training Academy, Chennai, commonly called OTA Chennai, runs the pre-commission course for NCC Special Entry candidates. OTA Chennai training lasts 49 weeks and combines physical training, military drills, and academic study. A few key points about this training are listed below:
Candidates are called for training based on their merit rank and the number of vacancies available that year.
Cadets cannot marry during training, and they are not allowed to stay with parents or guardians for the training period. Anyone found married during this time is discharged from the course.
On successful completion, cadets earn a Post Graduate Diploma in Defence Management and Strategic Studies from the University of Madras.
The government bears the training cost. However, a cadet who leaves the academy for personal reasons, other than medical grounds, has to repay the training cost at the rate fixed by the Army for each week of stay.
Arms and Services are assigned to each cadet just before the passing-out parade at OTA.
Officers commissioned through this route are eligible for various allowances on top of their basic pay. These SSC Officer Benefits are designed to support officers serving in different postings and roles across the country.

Officers also get Transport Allowance, High Altitude Allowance, Flying Allowance (where applicable), Qualification Grant, and rations. Those with children get Children Education Allowance at ₹2,250 per month per child, along with a Hostel Subsidy of ₹6,750 per month, where applicable. Note that some of these allowances are not paid to officers who already have government transport facilities or who are on long leave for a full calendar month.
After commissioning, every officer serves a probation period of six months from the date of commission. During this time, if the Army finds an officer unfit to hold the commission, their service can be ended at any point, whether during or after this six-month window.
Career growth in the Army follows a fixed timeline for the initial ranks, and later promotions depend on vacancies and selection boards. This is a key part of Army Officer Career planning for anyone joining through NCC Special Entry.
