List of Indian Navy Chiefs: The Indian Navy is currently ranked as the seventh most powerful naval force in the world, following only the United States, Russia, China, Japan, the United Kingdom, and France. Over the years, the Navy has integrated state-of-the-art technology, indigenous systems, and modern naval defence technology to keep pace with global maritime powers.

The Navy’s BrahMos missile is recognised as the fastest anti-ship cruise missile in operation anywhere, and its range was recently extended from 298 km to nearly 450 km by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

The Chief of the Naval Staff is a statutory office held by the professional head of the Indian Navy, the naval branch of the Indian Armed Forces. Below, we have provided the complete list of Indian Navy Chiefs. 

Indian Navy Chiefs

1. After India became independent in 1947, the naval leadership continued to function under the existing British-influenced structure, and the head of the service was designated as the Commander-in-Chief, Royal Indian Navy. A year later, reflecting the need to adapt the armed forces to the status of a sovereign nation, this title changed. On 21 June 1948, the designation was revised to Chief of the Naval Staff and Commander-in-Chief, Royal Indian Navy.

2. With India becoming a republic on 26 January 1950, the term "Royal" was dropped, and the position was renamed Chief of the Naval Staff and Commander-in-Chief.

3. In 1955, the Commanders-In-Chief (Change in Designation) Act formally redesignated the top naval officer as the Chief of the Naval Staff.

4. Until 1968, the post was held by a Vice Admiral with three-star rank; it was then elevated to the higher four-star rank of Admiral.

5. By rule, the Chief of the Naval Staff retires after three years in office or on reaching the age of 62, whichever comes first. The only exception so far has been Vice Admiral Ram Dass Katari, who served for four years and 43 days.

Current Navy Chief 2025

Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, PVSM, AVSM, NM (born on 15 May 1964), is a four-star officer currently serving as the 26th Chief of the Naval Staff of the Indian Navy. He assumed charge on 30 April 2024, succeeding Admiral R. Hari Kumar. 

Before taking over as CNS, he held several senior positions, including Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, Chief of Personnel, and Director General Naval Operations.

Naval Career

Over the course of his career, Admiral Tripathi has held various pivotal command and staff appointments that highlight his professional versatility. In the formative stages of his naval service, he undertook responsibilities as a Signals Communication Officer and later as the Electronic Warfare Officer on the guided-missile destroyer INS Mumbai (D62).

He later commanded the missile vessel INS Vinash (K47) and the corvette INS Kirch (P62), the latter of which he led during the President’s Fleet Review in 2005, presided over by Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. 

He also served as Executive Officer of INS Mumbai and went on to command the guided-missile frigate INS Trishul (F43).

His staff roles include serving as Fleet Operations Officer of the Western Fleet and Director of Naval Operations. At Naval Headquarters, while holding the rank of Commodore, he was Principal Director of Network Centric Operations and later Principal Director of Naval Plans.

The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) serves as the professional head and the highest-ranking officer of the Indian Navy. Within the Indian Armed Forces, the CNS is the senior-most naval officer in active service, unless the Chief of Defence Staff happens to be from the Navy. Since 1966, this position has consistently been held by a four-star Admiral.
