Post-Wise Physical Standards for Agniveer 2025

Let's look at the exact height, weight, and chest measurements needed for each major Agniveer post.

Agniveer GD Height, Weight & Chest

The General Duty (GD) role is the backbone of the Army. Physical standards are high because the job involves combat and intense physical tasks.

  • Height: 170 cm (standard minimum, subject to regional change).

  • Weight: Minimum weight is generally 50.8 kg. Your weight must be proportional to your height and age (check the chart below).

  • Chest: Unexpanded chest size must be 77 cm. It must expand to 82 cm upon full breath-in (a mandatory 5 cm expansion).

Agniveer Technical Height & Weight

The Technical role involves working with sophisticated equipment. While technical knowledge is key, the physical standards remain demanding.

  • Height: 170 cm (same as GD standard).

  • Weight: Minimum weight is typically 50.2 kg. It must be proportional to your height and age.

  • Chest: Unexpanded chest size must be 77 cm. It must expand to 82 cm upon full breath-in (5 cm expansion).

Agniveer Clerk Height & Chest

The Clerk/Store Keeper Technical (SKT) role is focused on office and inventory management. This is why the height requirement is lower.

  • Height: 162 cm. This is the lowest standard among male posts.

  • Weight: Minimum weight is around 47.2 kg.Must be proportional to your height.

  • Chest: The chest standard is the same as for GD: 77 cm unexpanded, with a mandatory 5 cm expansion to 82 cm.

Agniveer Tradesman Height & Weight

Tradesmen (like cooks, drivers, equipment repairers) provide essential support services. Their standards are very similar to General Duty.

  • Height: 170 cm (standard minimum).

  • Weight: Minimum weight is typically 50.8 kg. Must be proportional to height.

  • Chest: Unexpanded chest size can be slightly lower at 76 cm. But the mandatory expansion of 5 cm (to 81 cm) is still required.

Agniveer Chest Size & Measurement Standards

Checking your chest measurement is very important. It tells the doctors about your lung capacity and overall fitness. The rules are straightforward but must be followed exactly.

For male candidates, the central rule is the 5 cm expansion.

  • The Basic Rule: Your chest must measure at least 77 cm when you breathe out normally.

  • The Expansion Rule: When you take a deep breath in, your chest must expand by at least 5 cm. This means the second measurement must be 82 cm or more.

  • Tradesmen Exception: For some Tradesmen roles, the starting measurement is 76 cm. But you still need that 5 cm expansion, making the expanded size at least 81 cm.

Why the 5 cm expansion? This is checked to make sure your chest muscles and lungs are healthy and strong. If you cannot expand your chest enough, it might lead to a medical rejection.

For female candidates, the chest must be "well-developed." You need to show that you are capable of a minimum expansion of 0.5 cm.

Indian Army Height Standards (Comparison Table)

How do the Agniveer standards compare to other defence forces? The Indian Army standards are usually higher, especially for ground combat roles. This table highlights the key differences across the three services.

Role / Service

Minimum Height (Male)

Minimum Height (Female)

Primary Reason for Standard

Army Agniveer GD

170 cm

162 cm

Need for ground combat and carrying heavy loads.

Army Agniveer Clerk/SKT

162 cm

N/A

Relaxation for administrative/technical skills.

Indian Navy Agniveer

157 cm

152 cm

Less emphasis on vertical stature than ground forces.

Indian Air Force Agniveer Vayu

152.5 cm

152 cm

Focus on cockpit and confined space compatibility.

The higher Army standard of 170 cm for GD shows that fighting fit soldiers are the main priority.

Category-Wise Relaxation (OBC, SC, ST)

The government provides specific relaxations in height for candidates belonging to certain geographical regions and communities. If you belong to one of these groups, you can apply even if you are shorter than the general standard.

  • Tribal/Scheduled Tribe (ST) Candidates: The Indian Army allows a relaxation of 2 cm to 5 cm in height for candidates belonging to Scheduled Tribes (ST) and certain special regions like Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

  • North East (NE) Region: Candidates from the North Eastern areas of India often receive specific relaxations.

  • Hilly Areas/Gorkhas:

    • Gorkhas and Ladakhi candidates applying for certain specialized roles like JCO (Religious Teacher) may have a height requirement as low as 157 cm.

    • Candidates from hilly regions of North India (like Garhwal, Kumaon) can also receive 2-5 cm relaxation.

Important: To get this relaxation, you must have the official Domicile, Caste, or Tribal Certificate ready. The selection staff will check these documents carefully.

How to Measure Height, Weight & Chest Accurately

Do not wait for the recruitment day to measure yourself. Check your measurements at home beforehand. Make sure you get it right, as small mistakes can lead to rejection.

Measuring Height Correctly

  1. Find a Spot: Use a plain, vertical wall with no skirtings or bumps. Stand flat against it.

  2. Position: Stand straight. Your heels, buttocks, and shoulders must all touch the wall.

  3. Head Position: Look straight ahead. Your eyes must be perfectly horizontal.

  4. Marking: Place a flat, square object (like a thick book or ruler) horizontally on top of your head. Slide it down until it rests firmly on your scalp.

  5. Measure: Mark the spot where the book meets the wall. Measure from the floor up to that mark. This is your accurate height in centimeters (cm).

Measuring Chest Correctly

  1. Tape Placement: Use a flexible measuring tape. Ask someone to wrap it around your chest.

  2. Unexpanded (Normal): The tape should be placed around the widest part of your chest, typically under your armpits and across your shoulder blades. Breathe out naturally and take the first reading (e.g., 77 cm).

  3. Expanded (Deep Breath): Now, take the deepest breath you can. Do not move the tape. Immediately take the second reading. The difference between the second and first reading must be at least 5 cm.

Agniveer Height and Weight Calculator

You can quickly check if your weight is acceptable using the charts provided above. The general rule is that your weight must be proportional.

Example Check: Let's say you are a male candidate, 18 years old, and your height is 167 cm.

  1. Find the row for 167 cm in the Male Agniveer chart.

  2. Check Minimum Weight: Your weight must be at least 50.2 kg (Minimum Weight for all ages).

  3. Check Maximum Weight: For age 17-20 years, your weight must not exceed 61.4 kg (Max Permissible Weight).

If your weight is 63 kg, you are overweight for your height and age, and this can lead to medical rejection. You need to lose weight to meet the standard of 61.4 kg.
