Primary Colours

Primary colours are foundational, naturally present in nature, and are not created by mixing other colours.

There are three primary colours: Lemon Yellow, Cobalt Blue, and Booster Red (also known as Ruby Red). These are considered 100% pure colours found in nature. (Memory Tip: Remember the specific names: Lemon Yellow, Cobalt Blue, Booster Red/Ruby Red, as they are crucial for precision.)

Secondary Colours

Secondary colours are formed by combining two primary colours in equal amounts (50% of each primary colour).

  • Green: Created by mixing Cobalt Blue (50%) and Yellow (50%). This specific green is technically named Venderin Hue, where Hue means colour.

  • Orange: Created by mixing Lemon Yellow (50%) and Red (50%).

  • Purple: Created by mixing Red (50%) and Cobalt Blue (50%).

Warm Colours vs. Cool Colours

The colour wheel is divided into two main sections based on temperature associations:

  • Warm Colours: These colours are derived from the Red family. They include Yellow, Orange-Yellow, Orange, Orange-Red, Red, and Magenta. These hues evoke feelings of warmth, energy, and passion.

  • Cool Colours: These colours originate from the Green family and Blue family. They typically include Green, Light Blue, Blue, and Purple. Cool colours are often associated with calmness, serenity, and depth.

  • Exception: While most greens are cool, Sap Green (a mixture of green and yellow) is considered a warm colour.

Tertiary Colours

Tertiary colours (also called third colours) are created by mixing a primary colour with a secondary colour in equal amounts.

  • Examples include: Orange-Yellow, Orange-Red, Sap Green, and Magenta. These combinations bridge the gap between primary and secondary hues.

Colour Harmony

Colour harmony refers to the balance between colours, creating a visually pleasing arrangement.

 It is achieved when equal amounts of warm colours and cool colours are combined, leading to a sense of unity and visual peace within a composition. This balance is crucial for effective design, especially in 2D compositions.

Saturation

Saturation describes the intensity or purity of a colour. A pure colour (e.g., 100% red) exhibits high saturation. 

When colours are mixed, the intensity of the original colour decreases, thereby lowering its saturation level. For instance, as you move from pure red to orange, and then to yellow, the intensity (and thus saturation) of red diminishes.

Value

Value refers to the lightness or darkness of a colour. A very light colour has a low value, while a very dark colour has a high value.

  • Black represents the highest value (most darkness).

  • White represents the lowest value (most lightness).

Colour Schemes

Colour schemes are specific combinations of colours that are aesthetically pleasing or create particular visual effects. There are five main colour schemes frequently tested in design entrance exams:

1. Complementary Scheme

Complementary colours are those found exactly opposite to each other on the colour wheel, typically at a 90-degree angle. The rule is that one colour must be a primary colour, and the other a secondary colour.

  • Examples:

  • Yellow (Primary) is complementary to Purple (Secondary).

  • Blue (Primary) is complementary to Orange (Secondary).

  • Red (Primary) is complementary to Green (Secondary).

  • Characteristics: These combinations offer strong visual contrast and are often considered "friendship colours" due to their pleasing visual interaction. (Memory Tip: Remember "Our opposite colour is our complementary colour.")

2. Analogous Scheme

Analogous colours are found side-by-side on the colour wheel, usually consisting of three neighbouring colours.

  • Examples:

  • Yellow, Orange, and Red are analogous.

  • Green, Blue, and Purple are analogous.

  • Characteristics: These schemes typically create a harmonious and calming effect, often perceived as "darker family" colours when used in compositions.

3. Triadic Scheme

A triadic scheme uses three colours equally spaced on the colour wheel, forming an equilateral triangle. Each angle in this triangle is 45 degrees.

  • Examples:

  • Yellow, Blue, and Red are triadic.

  • Orange, Green, and Purple are triadic.

  • Characteristics: This scheme provides a vibrant yet balanced contrast. An artwork featuring both warm colours and cool colours together often indicates a triadic colour scheme.

4. Split Complementary Scheme

A split complementary scheme is a variation of the complementary scheme. Instead of using the direct complementary colour, it uses the two colours adjacent to the complementary colour.

  • Example: If Blue is complementary to Orange, the split complementary scheme would involve Blue along with Yellow-Orange and Red-Orange (the colours next to Orange).

  • Characteristics: These combinations can appear less harmonious or "weird" compared to direct complementary pairs, making them less frequently used for generally appealing designs.

5. Monochromatic Scheme

A monochromatic scheme is derived from a single base colour and includes its various light and dark tones, tints, and shades.

  • Characteristics: "Mono" means one, and "chromatic" refers to colours, indicating colours from the same family. It often features mostly light colours from that single family, such as different shades of grey from black, or various tones of blue. Analogous colours use typically darker colours side-by-side, while monochromatic schemes focus on varying lightness/darkness within one colour.

Colour Psychology

Colour psychology explores how colours evoke specific emotions and convey different meanings, which is vital for design and communication.

  • White: Associated with innocence, trust, and cleanliness.

  • Black: Represents luxury, trust, depth, and power.

  • Pink: Conveys kindness and tenderness.

  • Saffron/Green/Yellow: Often linked to prosperity and festive occasions.

  • Blue: Symbolises trust, dependability, loyalty, logic, serenity, and security. (Memory Tip: Blue is associated with trust and security, which is why the SBI logo is blue. White and Blue are used in hospitals to suggest cleanliness and trust.)

  • Purple: Denotes luxury and royalty.

  • Brown/Grey: Can suggest confusion, gloominess, or dirtiness.

  • Red: Implies anger, danger, but also appetite stimulation and urgency (e.g., for sales or warnings). (Memory Tip: Red is used in food branding (e.g., Burger King, McDonald's) to stimulate appetite and in sales signs to drive impulse buying.)

  • Yellow: Signifies warmth, optimism, and festivity.

  • Green: Represents growth and harmony.

  • Orange: Often used to convey energy and enthusiasm.
