NID BDes Educational Qualification

To meet the NID BDes educational qualification, you must have passed or be appearing for the Class 12 (10+2) examination from a recognised board during the academic year 2025–26. Students from Science, Commerce, Arts, Humanities, and other streams are eligible to apply. Boards such as CBSE, CISCE (ICSE/ISC), IB, and other recognised boards are accepted.

First-Attempt Requirement

If you are appearing for Class 12 during the academic year 2025–26, you must pass the examination in your first attempt. Candidates with a compartment, backlog, or supplementary examination will not meet the eligibility requirements. The qualifying marksheet must be submitted on or before the prescribed deadline; otherwise, the admission will be cancelled.

Examinations Accepted as Equivalent to Class 12

NID accepts some other exams as equivalent to 10+2. Here is the list:

  • Final exam of the 10+2 system under a Central or State Board recognised by AIU.

  • Intermediate or two-year pre-University exam recognised by AIU.

  • Final exam of the two-year course from the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.

  • Senior Secondary exam under the National Institute of Open Schooling, with at least five subjects.

  • Any public school, Board, or University exam completed in India or abroad, recognised by AIU as equal to 10+2.

  • H.S.C. vocational examination.

  • GCE examination at Advanced (A) level from London, Cambridge, or Sri Lanka.

  • AICTE-approved three-year full-time Diploma after Class X.

If your exam is not on this list, or you studied outside India, you need an equivalence certificate. You can get this from AIU, New Delhi, or the Ministry of Education, Government of India. Submit it when you upload your documents.

NID BDes Admission Eligibility for Overseas Candidates

If you hold citizenship of a country other than India, you fall under the Overseas category. You must still meet the NID BDes Eligibility Criteria explained above, along with the NID BDes admission eligibility rules for this category.

NID offers extra seats for Overseas candidates through a supernumerary quota. This adds 15% more seats on top of the regular intake.

  • NID Ahmedabad: 19 seats

  • NID Andhra Pradesh: 11 seats

  • NID Haryana: 11 seats

  • NID Madhya Pradesh: 11 seats

As an Overseas candidate, you cannot use age relaxation or scribe facility. You also fall outside the reserved category quotas, such as GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PwD. You must pay fees as per the Overseas fee structure.

If you hold an OCI or PIO card, you must apply only under the Overseas category. NRIs with an Indian passport must apply as Indian Nationals instead.

NID BDes Eligibility After 12th

Many students ask about NID BDes eligibility after 12th. The answer is simple. Once you pass Class XII from a recognised board, in any stream, you become eligible. You do not need a specific subject combination. This keeps the process fair for all students.

Important Notes on NID BDes Eligibility Criteria

Here are a few more points to remember.

  • If your board delays your Class XII result, your admission stays provisional.

  • You must submit a signed undertaking on the official portal.

  • Both you and your parent must sign this undertaking.

  • You still need to submit your final marksheet by 15 July 2026.

  • If you miss this date, NID will cancel your admission and forfeit your fee.

  • If you have not appeared for Class XII before the seat allotment date, you cannot continue in the admission process.

  • You must clear Class XII without any pending backlog, within the given timeline.

This makes the NID BDes minimum qualification clear.
