NID Eligibility Criteria 2027: Age Limit, Qualification for B.Des. & M.Des.

The National Institute of Design (NID) has prescribed separate eligibility conditions for Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) and Master of Design (M.Des.) programmes. Before filling out the application form, you should carefully check the age limit, educational qualification, and category-wise requirements.

The NID Eligibility Criteria 2027 are based on two major factors. These are your age and your educational qualification. There are also separate provisions for Overseas (Supernumerary) category candidates. Here, we’ll explain all the eligibility conditions for both programmes.

NID Eligibility Criteria 2027 for B.Des.

To apply for the B.Des. programme, you must meet both the age limit and the educational qualification. This is an important part of the NID eligibility criteria 2027, so read it carefully.

NID Exam Age Limit 2027 for B.Des.

Your date of birth decides whether you can apply. This is known as the NID exam age limit 2027, and it is different for each category:

• If you belong to the General Category or General EWS Category, you must be born on or after 1 July 2005.

• If you belong to the Reserved Category (OBC-NCL, SC, ST), you must be born on or after 1 July 2002.

• If you belong to the PwD Reserved Category, you must be born on or after 1 July 2000.

• If you are a Foreign National applying under the Overseas (Supernumerary) Category, you must be born on or after 1 July 2005.

This age limit forms a key part of the NID age criteria 2027 for the B.Des. programme.

NID Educational Qualification 2027 for B.Des.

Applications for the academic year 2026-27 are open to you if you have passed, or will appear for, your higher secondary (10+2) examination in the academic year 2025–26. You can be from any stream, such as Science, Arts, Commerce, or Humanities. Your board must be a recognised board, such as CBSE, IB, ICSE, or an equivalent board.

If you are appearing for your 10+2 exam in 2025–26, you must pass it in your first attempt. You must submit your qualifying marksheet on or before 15 July 2026. If you have a backlog, compartment, or supplementary paper, or you fail to submit your Class XII result by this date, your admission will be cancelled. Your entire fee will also be forfeited.

The following examinations are treated as equivalent to the 10+2 system:

• The final examination of the 10+2 system under a Central or State Board recognised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

• The Intermediate or two-year pre-University examination under a recognised Board or University.

• The final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.

• The Senior Secondary School examination under the National Institute of Open Schooling, with a minimum of five subjects.

• Any public school, Board, or University examination completed in India or abroad that AIU recognises as equivalent to 10+2.

• The H.S.C. vocational examination.

• The General Certificate of Education (GCE) examination at the Advanced (A) level, taken in London, Cambridge, or Sri Lanka.

• The AICTE-approved three-year full-time Diploma after Class X, offered by a Board of Technical Education in any Indian state or Union Territory.

If you are appearing for, or have completed, your Class XII (or equivalent) exam outside India, or from a Board not listed above, you must get an equivalence certificate. This certificate comes from the AIU, New Delhi, or the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It confirms that your exam is equivalent to the Class XII exam in India. You must submit this certificate at the time of uploading your documents.

NID Eligibility Criteria 2027 for M.Des.

If you want to apply for the M.Des. programme, in any discipline, you must fulfil the age and educational criteria given below. This section of the NID admission eligibility 2027 applies to all M.Des. applicants.

NID Age Criteria 2027 for M.Des.

Your category decides your age limit for M.Des:

• If you are an Indian National in the General Category or General EWS Category, you must be born on or after 1 July 1994.

• If you are an Indian National in the Reserved Category (OBC-NCL, SC, ST), you must be born on or after 1 July 1991.

• If you are an Indian National in the PwD Reserved Category, you must be born on or after 1 July 1989.

• If you are a Foreign National in the Overseas (Supernumerary) Category, you must be born on or after 1 July 1994.

NID Qualification 2027 for M.Des.

Besides the age limit, you must also hold a Bachelor's degree, or its equivalent, in any discipline. This degree must come from a University or institution set up by an Act of Parliament or State legislature in India. It can also be from a University deemed under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, or a qualification recognised by the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

If your degree or certificate is from a University or Board outside India, you must submit an equivalence certificate. You can get this certificate from the AIU, New Delhi, or the Ministry of Education, Government of India. You must submit it at the time of uploading your documents. If you are in your final year (academic year 2025-26) and your university has not yet issued your final degree certificate, you can still apply. However, you must meet these conditions:

1. You must pass your final qualifying exam on your first attempt. You must submit your final result or marksheet to the Academic Record Cell on or before 31 July 2026. If you have a backlog, compartment, or supplementary paper, or you fail to submit your result by this date, your provisional admission will be cancelled, and your fee will be forfeited.

2. You must have appeared for all subjects and cleared any backlogs on or before 28 June 2026. You must submit a self-undertaking, signed by you and your parents, along with an undertaking from your college or university. This confirms that you have appeared, or will appear, for your final year exam without any pending backlogs by 28 June 2026. If you have not appeared for all subjects by this date, you will not be eligible for further admission steps.

3. If you are still appearing for your final year exam even after getting provisional admission, you must submit an extra certificate from your college or university. You can find the format for this certificate on the NID admissions website. You must present this certificate at the time of document verification, confirming that you completed your final exam by 28 June 2026.

NID Overseas Category Eligibility 2027

If you hold citizenship of a country other than India, you can apply under the Overseas (Supernumerary) category. You must still meet the age and educational qualification given above for your chosen programme.

For B.Des., NID offers supernumerary seats as follows:

For M.Des., 15% of the total seats are supernumerary seats for Overseas category candidates:

As an Overseas category candidate, keep these points in mind:

• You fall outside the reserved seats for GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PwD categories. You cannot use age-relaxation or scribe facilities. You must pay fees as per the Overseas fee structure.

• If you hold an OCI or PIO card, you must apply only under the Overseas category.

• You must have a valid, current passport when you apply online.

• If you are an NRI holding an Indian passport, you cannot apply under the Overseas category. You must apply as an Indian national instead.

• NID will offer you admission based on the final merit list of the Overseas category, prepared after all admission stages are complete.

• To accept your offer, you must visit the NID campus in person. You will need to submit self-attested copies of your passport, your SSC and HSC mark sheets (or their equivalents), your degree certificate, and your equivalence certificate from the AIU or Ministry of Education.

• You are responsible for getting your student visa before your programme begins.

• If you fail to pay fees or submit documents, or you decline your offer, NID will cancel your seat and offer it to the next candidate.

• Vacant Overseas seats will not go to candidates from other categories.

• You must appear for both DAT Prelims and DAT Mains. You can choose any test centre for DAT Prelims from the list given in the Admissions Handbook.

• English is the medium of instruction at NID.

Who Can Apply for NID 2027

To understand who can apply for NID 2027, you need to check both your age and your qualification against the category you belong to. If you meet the age limit for your category and you hold the required educational qualification, you are eligible. This applies whether you are applying for B.Des., M.Des., or under the Overseas category. This is the simplest way to check the NID Eligibility Criteria 2027 before you begin your application.

NID Admission 2027 Eligibility: Important Notes on Class XII Result

If you are yet to appear for your Class XII exam in 2026, you must pass it in your first attempt. If you have a backlog, compartment, or supplementary paper, or you do not clear the exam, your admission will be cancelled, and your fee will be forfeited.

If your Board or University has not declared your Class XII result by the date of seat allotment, your admission will be strictly provisional. In this case:

1. You and your parent(s) must submit an undertaking in the prescribed format, available on the NID admissions website. You must submit this during seat allotment, fee payment, and document upload.

2. If you are seeking provisional admission due to a pending Class XII result, you must submit your qualifying marksheet on or before 15 July 2026. If you fail to submit it by this date, your provisional admission will be cancelled, and your entire fee will be forfeited.

If you have not appeared for your Class XII exam before the date of seat allocation, you will not be eligible to take part in the further admission process.
