The NIFT Counselling Process 2026 is the final stage of admission for candidates who qualify for the NIFT entrance examination. Through counselling, candidates are allotted seats in various NIFT campuses based on their Common Merit Rank (CMR), category reservation, course preferences, and seat availability.
The process involves multiple rounds of seat allotment, document verification, fee payment, and the option to upgrade allotted seats. Understanding how counselling works, the difference between CMR and Category Rank, important documents required, and common mistakes to avoid can significantly improve your chances of securing your preferred NIFT campus and program.
After the declaration of the NIFT 2026 results, qualified candidates will need to participate in the counselling process for seat allocation across various NIFT campuses and programs. The counselling process is expected to be conducted in multiple rounds and will include registration, document verification, choice filling, seat allotment, and admission fee payment.

The NIFT Counselling Process is conducted online through multiple stages. Candidates first complete registration and upload documents. After successful verification, they fill their preferred campuses and courses.
Seats are allotted based on Common Merit Rank (CMR), reservation category, preferences, and seat availability. Candidates who receive a seat must submit their willingness and pay the admission fee to confirm their admission.
Common Merit Rank (CMR):
This is your overall All India Rank.
It represents your position among all students who appeared for the NIFT exam.
Example: If 500 students take the exam and your rank is 120, you stand at rank 120 across India.
Category Rank:
This rank is determined only in comparison to students within your specific category (e.g., OBC, SC, ST, EWS, PWD).
Example: If you are from the OBC category and your category rank is 18, it means you are the 18th highest-ranked student within the OBC category.
Counselling Call: You are called for counselling primarily based on your Common Merit Rank.
Seat Allotment: During seat allotment, category reservation is also considered.
If a seat is available in your category, you will receive the benefit of that reservation.
Otherwise, admission will proceed based on your Common Merit Rank.
It is crucial to understand that counselling calls and final seat allotments are distinct processes.
A significant number of admissions are cancelled because students select a category (e.g., OBC, EWS, SC, ST) in their application form but fail to produce a proper, valid certificate for that category at the time of counselling.
Crucial Warning: If you have filled a category in your application form, ensure you have the proper, valid certificate available during counselling. Failure to do so can directly affect your admission. Do not take this lightly.
The NIFT counselling process is typically conducted in multiple rounds. Generally, there are three regular counselling rounds, followed by a final Spot Round to fill any remaining vacant seats.
Round 1:
Seat allotment is based on your Common Merit Rank and your preferred colleges and courses.
If a seat is allotted, you must pay the registration or academic fee to confirm it.
Round 2:
Students can opt for an upgrade.
Vacant seats are filled, and students who did not receive a seat in the first round are given a chance.
Choosing an upgrade option might lead to a better campus or course, depending on availability.
Round 3:
This is the final regular round of counselling.
Remaining vacant seats are allotted.
Seats that were previously allotted but subsequently withdrawn by students also become available for this round.
The Spot Round is the final counselling phase where remaining vacant seats are filled. It is an important opportunity for several groups:
Students who did not get a seat in earlier rounds can participate.
Fresh candidates who missed the initial counselling rounds can also participate.
Therefore, if you did not achieve your desired result in the first rounds, do not panic, as the Spot Round can still provide a valuable opportunity.
It is crucial to have the following documents ready for the counselling process: (Memory Tip: Start preparing these documents now; they are essential for your admission. Regularly check your email for NIFT forms and updates.)
Class 10th Marksheet
Class 12th Marksheet
Passing Certificate
Passport Size Photographs
Category Certificate (if applicable)
EWS Certificate (if applicable)
PWD Certificate (if applicable)
School Leaving Certificate for Domicile Seats
PCM Proof for B.F.Tech students: If you applied for B.F.Tech, you must have Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) in your 12th grade as per the eligibility criteria.
Valid Category Certificate: If you filled a specific category (e.g., EWS, General EWS) in your admission form, you must present the corresponding valid certificate.
Affidavit: An affidavit may be required if your board results are not declared by the time of counselling.
NIFT Proforma Forms: NIFT sends specific proforma forms via email, which need to be filled out and uploaded. Regularly check your mailbox to avoid missing important updates.
After uploading your documents, a verification process takes place.
If any document is found to be incorrect or unclear, NIFT will provide an option to re-upload it within a limited time frame.
Important: Scan documents properly, ensure details are clearly visible, and upload them in the correct format.
If your documents are not successfully verified, the counselling process will not be able to continue.
