The NIFT 2026 admission process will be conducted entirely through e-Counselling, comprising three regular rounds followed by a Spot Round. What is the NIFT Seat Allocation Process 2026?

The NIFT admission process follows a centralized online counselling system. Seat allotment is conducted based on:

  • Common Merit Rank (CMR)

The complete process includes the following stages:

Step 1: Online Registration

Candidates must register using:

  • Roll Number

Understanding Float, Slide and Freeze Options

One of the most important aspects of NIFT counselling is choosing the correct willingness option.

Float

Candidates opting for Float accept their allotted seat but remain eligible for higher-preference choices across all campuses in subsequent rounds.

Slide

This option is available mainly for B.Des candidates and allows consideration for higher-preference programmes within the same campus.

Freeze

Candidates selecting Freeze accept the allotted seat permanently and will not be considered for further upgradation.

Important Rule

Candidates can change:

  • Float → Slide

  • Float → Freeze

  • Slide → Freeze

However, reverse changes are not permitted.

NIFT Srinagar reserves 35% seats for eligible candidates from:

  • Ladakh

Any vacant domicile seats are eventually converted into All India seats during later counselling stages.
