Studying other subjects too? You can find them all in the Tamil Nadu HSC syllabus guide, and Botany students can start with the Tamil Nadu 12th Botany PYQs to see how the two papers compare.
Zoology carries 100 marks, split into theory, practical and internal assessment. The theory paper is 3 hours long. The other subjects follow a similar structure, which you can compare in the TN Class 12 exam pattern.
| Component | Marks |
| Theory | 70 |
| Practical | 20 |
| Internal assessment | 10 |
| Total | 100 |
| Theory exam duration | 3 hours |
The 70-mark theory paper has four sections.

| Section B | Very Short Answer | 3 marks |
| Section C | Short Answer | 5 marks |
| Section D | Long Answer | 10 marks |
| Topic group | Chapters | Approx. marks | Focus areas |
| Genetics, Evolution and Reproduction | 1–6 | 18–22 | Principles of Inheritance, Molecular Genetics, Human Reproduction |
| Biotechnology and Human Welfare | 7–10 | 16–21 | Applied biotechnology, human health, immunology, microbes |
| Ecology and Environment | 11–13 | 9–12 | Organisms and populations, biodiversity, environmental issues |
To pass TN HSE +2 (Class 12) Zoology you need at least 35 marks out of 100 overall.
Overall minimum: 35 marks across theory, practical and internal assessment combined.
Theory minimum: at least 15 out of 70 in the written paper.
Practical and internal: no separate minimum, but appearing for the practical exam is mandatory.
Practical (20 marks) and internal assessment (10 marks) together make up 30 of the 100 marks, so they are an easy place to score. [Add the list of experiments, spotters and record-work marking from the official practical scheme.]
Finish one unit completely before starting the next. Genetics and Evolution is the heaviest conceptual unit, so give it the most time. If you prefer guided classes, the Tamil Nadu Class 12 batches cover the full syllabus unit by unit.
Learn how the steps connect, for example from DNA to protein or from infection to immune response. This makes answers easier to recall and write.
Keep concise notes of definitions, processes, classifications, examples and key terms. They are most useful in the last two weeks before the exam.
Solve 1-mark MCQs, short answers and long answers separately. Notice how much detail each mark category needs, then test yourself with the TN 12th model papers, which follow the board’s paper format.
Practise the labelled diagrams in the Reproduction, Human Health and Genetics chapters. Neat, correctly labelled diagrams help you score well in long answers.
Practical and internal marks are worth 30 of the 100 marks. Revise experiments and spotters along with theory.
Attempt a few full 3-hour papers from the TN 12th previous year question papers. They show which topics repeat and help you improve your speed.
