JEE Full Form

What is The JEE Full Form:  JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) is a national-level engineering entrance exam conducted annually across India. It acts as the entry point for students seeking admission to top-tier undergraduate engineering courses across renowned institutions in India. The JEE Main exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) to shortlist candidates for BTech, BArch, and BPlan courses offered by NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. Additionally, JEE Main acts as the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced 2026, which is essential for gaining admission into the IITs. Held in computer-based mode, the exam takes place in multiple shifts across various exam centers in India and abroad. Candidates can choose to appear in either one or both sessions, and the National Testing Agency (NTA) uses the higher of the two scores to determine the All India Rank (AIR).

History of JEE Examination

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), known as one of India’s most challenging engineering entrance tests, was first introduced in 1960 to facilitate admissions into the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Initially, subjects included Physics, Chemistry, Math, and English.

Over the years, JEE has seen multiple reforms:

  • 1997: The exam was conducted twice due to a paper leak.

  • 2000: A two-tier system was introduced a screening test followed by a main exam (only top 20,000 qualifiers could attempt the main).

  • 2005: The screening was removed, and a single objective paper was introduced.

  • In 2013, as part of reforms initiated by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD), a unified entrance examination system was introduced for engineering admissions across the country.

This change led to the launch of JEE Main and JEE Advanced.

  1. JEE Main took the place of the earlier AIEEE and became the qualifying exam for admissions into NITs, IIITs, and other centrally funded institutes.

  2. JEE Advanced was introduced as the next stage, exclusively for the top performers of JEE Main, and serves as the entrance test for admission into IITs.

Question types in JEE have evolved to include single and multiple correct answers, integer-type, match the following, and comprehension-based questions, with variations depending on the conducting IIT.

JEE Full Form And JEE Main/ JEE Advanced Exam Related Details

Here are the brief points related to JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams:

  • JEE Full Form is the Joint Entrance Examination.

  • JEE Advanced and JEE Main are the two exams that collectively make JEE. One of the most difficult entrance exams for undergraduate courses is the JEE Advanced exam.

  • The qualifying exam known as JEE Main is what enables candidates to take the JEE Advanced test, which is the final step towards admission to universities such as NITs and IITs.

  • The JEE Main exam is administered twice a year, with the assumption that there will only be one admission attempt during a given academic session. Candidates may select one or both papers. The exam will be conducted online.

  • The exam is three hours long, divided into three subjects, and includes thirty multiple-choice questions (MCQs) covering mathematics, physics, and chemistry. There is a negative score for the incorrect response.

  • Paper 1 is for enrollment in BE and B.Tech programs;

  • Paper 2 is for enrollment in B.Arch programs; and Paper 3 is for enrollment in B.Planning courses. While candidates may take the JEE Main exam three times in a row, they may only take the JEE Advanced exam twice in a row. The National Testing Agency (NTA), which administers the JEE Main exam, sets the cut-off score, which varies based on the category (General, OBC, SC & St, and PWD).

About JEE Advanced 2026 Exam

JEE Advanced 2026 is the national-level entrance exam conducted for admission to Bachelor’s, Integrated Master’s, and Dual Degree programs (entry at 10+2 level) offered by all IITs across India. The exam is jointly conducted by the seven Zonal Coordinating IITs IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Guwahati, and IIT Roorkee under the guidance of the Joint Admission Board (JAB).

Eligibility Criteria For JEE Advanced Exam
