Many students completing Class 12 face uncertainty when JEE Main scores are not enough for IITs or NITs, or when they plan to restart their engineering journey. AKTU Counselling 2026 provides an admission pathway through UPTAC for securing B.Tech seats in affiliated colleges.
It helps students understand eligibility, registration steps, and course selection across branches like computer science, AI, data science, machine learning, and electronics. Here, we provide clear information on eligibility, registration steps, and course selection across branches like computer science, AI, data science, machine learning, and electronics.
The official portal for AKTU B.Tech admissions and e-counselling is Uttar Pradesh Technical Admission Counselling (UPTAC). This platform also provides a comprehensive candidate manual, which details every step required for B.Tech admissions.

Electronics (ECE): This is an emerging branch with substantial growth, driven by the booming semiconductor industry. India's focus on semiconductor manufacturing creates excellent placement opportunities for ECE graduates.
Core Branches (Mechanical, Civil, Electrical): These branches offer significant opportunities in government jobs.
Mechanical: Ideal for students interested in the automobile sector.
Civil: Suitable for careers in the construction field, with strong prospects for government job opportunities like assistant engineer (AE), junior engineer (JE), and engineering services examination (ESE).
Electrical: Focuses on power transmission and generation.
PSU Job Opportunities: Electrical, Mechanical, and ECE branches typically have more vacancies in PSUs, though Civil Engineering also offers good opportunities.
While choosing a college, students should consider the following factors:
Availability of their preferred branch, such as computer science, artificial intelligence, data science, electronics and communication engineering (ECE), mechanical, Civil, or electrical engineering.
Placement opportunities and industry connections.
College fees and overall affordability.
Faculty, laboratory facilities, and academic environment.
Location and accessibility.
Opportunities for higher education preparation, including GATE.
AKTU has several government and private affiliated colleges across Uttar Pradesh, including institutions in Gautam Buddh Nagar, Ghaziabad, Lucknow, and other cities. Some well-known colleges include Greater Noida Institute of Technology (GNIOT), KIET Group of Institutions, GL Bajaj Institute of Technology and Management, and Lucknow University.
Students planning to prepare for GATE or other competitive examinations alongside B.Tech should also evaluate the academic workload and study environment offered by the college before making a final choice.
Category Certificates (EWS, OBC-NCL): Even if not used during the JEE Mains application, the latest category certificates (for the current academic cycle, e.g., 2026-27) can be utilised during AKTU counselling. Using a category certificate provides the advantage of a lower cutoff and, therefore, a higher chance of admission.
Required documents: Class 10th marksheet, email address, mobile number, and other documents as specified on the UPTAC portal.
Non-JEE Mains Qualified Students:
UP Domicile: Some seats are available for UP domicile candidates based on their 10+2 marks.
Private Colleges: Some private colleges may have management quota seats, but the percentage varies by institute.
While 10th and 12th board percentages are not a factor for GATE eligibility, students should aim to maintain a minimum CGPA of 6.5 to 7.0 in their graduation (B.Tech). This graduation CGPA is crucial for:
Eligibility for government job applications.
Admission to IITs for postgraduate studies, as some IITs have CGPA cutoffs.
(Memory Tip: Your 12th marksheet will generally not be relevant after B.Tech admission, and your 10th marksheet will only be used for age calculation.) Focus your academic efforts on achieving a strong CGPA during your B.Tech studies.
