AKTU (Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University) marking system is designed to evaluate students based on both internal performance and final semester exams. Understanding this system is important because it helps students plan their studies strategically and avoid unnecessary confusion about passing rules. Each theory subject follows a 100-mark structure, and students must meet specific conditions to successfully clear a subject.
In AKTU University, the maximum marks attainable in any theory subject are 100. This total is divided into two main components:
External Examination: 70 marks are allocated for the external examination, which is typically the end-of-semester exam.
Internal Assessment: The remaining 30 marks are awarded through internal assessment. These marks primarily depend on factors such as:
Attendance
Sessional marks (performance in internal tests or assignments)
PUT examination (Performance Understanding Test)
To successfully pass a theory subject in AKTU, students must meet two critical conditions:
External Examination Minimum: A mandatory minimum of 21 marks must be obtained in the external examination. Failing to achieve this minimum will result in a fail for that particular examination, regardless of the internal marks obtained.
Total Aggregate: A total score of 40 marks (sum of external and internal marks) or more is required to pass the subject.
Important Note: If the external marks are less than the mandatory 21 marks, the internal marks are not considered, and the student will automatically fail the subject.
The following examples clarify how the passing criteria are applied:
Case 1: Student A (Failed)
External Marks: 22 (Meets the 21-mark minimum)
Internal Marks: 14
Total Marks: 36
Result: Fail (The total marks are below the required 40).
Case 2: Student B (Failed)
External Marks: 16 (Does NOT meet the 21-mark minimum)
Internal Marks: (Irrelevant, as the external minimum is not met)
Total Marks: (Irrelevant, as the external minimum is not met)
Result: Fail (External marks are below the mandatory minimum of 21, even if high internal marks could have theoretically pushed the total above 40).
Case 3: Student C (Passed)
External Marks: 35 (Meets the 21-mark minimum)
Internal Marks: 5
Total Marks: 40
Result: Pass (Both conditions are met: external minimum achieved, and total aggregate is 40).
Case 4: Student D (Passed)
External Marks: 24 (Meets the 21-mark minimum)
Internal Marks: 16
Total Marks: 40
Result: Pass (Both conditions are met: external minimum achieved, and total aggregate is 40).
AKTU incorporates a grace mark system to provide a safety net for students who narrowly miss the passing criteria.
Allotment: A maximum of seven grace marks can be awarded in total over one academic year.
Application: If a student's total marks are just below the passing threshold (e.g., scoring 19 marks in an external exam where 21 are required, or a total of 39 where 40 is needed), grace marks may be added to help them pass.
Result Sheet Notation: If grace marks are applied to help a student pass, the result sheet will clearly indicate "Pass with Grace" (Grace marks act as a safety net, allowing you to pass if you are slightly below the required total, provided you haven't exhausted your annual grace mark limit).
