Achieving a top-tier rank in GATE while managing the final year of engineering is a challenge that requires more than just hard work; it requires a strategic approach. Rohan’s journey to 61 marks is a masterclass in persistence. After an initial attempt that didn't go as planned, he didn't let the setback define him. Instead, he used it as a stepping stone to refine his technique.
By consistently following lectures, solving DPPs and workbooks, and attempting mock tests, he built clarity and confidence in his concepts. Physics Wallah didn’t just provide content; it gave him a clear path to stay disciplined, recover from backlogs, and keep improving every day. That consistency is what turned his rank around.

Like many students, Rohan faced the dilemma of whether to settle for campus placements or aim for something bigger. He recognised that while his college offered some opportunities, they didn't align with his long-term ambitions for technical excellence.
"Placement lene ka hi tha lekin mere college me itni achhi companies nahi aa rahi thi."
Rohan realised that the standard placement route might limit his potential, leading him to consider specialised higher education as a more viable path.
"Mujhe lag raha tha ki main better college se jaake better placement le sakta hu."
Driven by this insight, he decided to dedicate his final year to intense preparation, choosing to start his journey right as the academic year began.
"To maine fir fourth year me start ki apni June se start ki apni preparation."
His ultimate goal became crystal clear: he wanted to specialise in high-demand core sectors rather than taking a generic job role.
"Mujhe toh higher studies ka hi mann hai... actually VLSI ke zyada mann hai."
This shift in mindset became the foundation of his journey, pushing him to target the most difficult subjects with a fresh perspective. He understood that premier institutes like IISc Bangalore or IIT Bombay would provide the elite career trajectory he desired.
One of the biggest hurdles for any aspirant is maintaining the flow of study. Rohan tackled this by starting his preparation for the second attempt the very next day after his previous GATE exam ended, showing immense mental grit.
"Jis din GATE hua toh uske next din se maine start kar diya tha... tab Control chal raha tha aur main thoda lag kar raha tha."
Knowing he was slightly behind the current batch, he committed to a rigorous daily schedule to ensure he never missed a learning milestone.
"Lagbhag har week mein jo test hota tha, almost sabhi din lecture karta tha."
His preparation was not just about watching videos; he followed a comprehensive cycle of active learning and problem-solving.
"Uske baad phir DPP solve karta tha... phir workbook jo bhi agar koi teacher de de toh woh solve kar leta tha."
By the time the final stretch arrived, Rohan had built enough stamina to dedicate his entire focus to testing his knowledge under exam conditions.
"January mein bahut zyada diye the test, mock test... last time December-January bahut sahi time rehta hai."
Even when he found himself lagging behind the live batch schedule of the Parakram Batch, he didn't panic. He increased his daily lecture intake to catch up, ensuring his fundamentals were rock solid before the final exam.
Rohan’s journey teaches a vital lesson: how to handle a backlog without losing quality. Initially, he had to bridge the gap between where the course stood and where he began.
"Main thoda lag kar raha tha... toh tab maine thode zyada lecture dekhe."
He strategically used his existing knowledge to move through familiar topics quickly while focusing his energy on the parts of the syllabus he hadn't mastered.
"Tab aata hi tha almost syllabus... zyada lecture dekh ke notes banaye phir."
Despite some initial delays in his testing schedule, his consistent efforts allowed him to regain his momentum and align with the course timeline.
"Test mera thoda sa delay ho gaya dene mein lekin phir main track pe aa gaya."
He reached a stage where his syllabus was largely complete, allowing him to shift his focus to subject-specific evaluation by late November.
"Subject-wise toh almost finish hone wale honge... November end ya December starting se thode-thode diye the."
Instead of skipping topics, he used this disciplined catch-up to build a strong foundation. This approach proved to be a turning point, providing the revision and confidence needed for his high-ranking performance.
Physics Wallah acted as the backbone of Rohan's preparation, providing a path that kept him motivated throughout the year. He found that the way the material was organised made complex topics feel manageable.
"Jo content tha bahut structured tha aur baaki jo teachers wagera woh inspiration ke jaise kaam karte hain."
The mentorship provided by the faculty was crucial, helping him maintain a positive and productive mindset every single day.
"Kaafi motivated rehta tha... matlab as such kuch dikkat nahi aaya... class kar lo toh matlab sahi rehta tha daily."
Unlike many students who experience mid-year burnout, Rohan felt that the PW ecosystem supported his mental health and continuity.
"Matlab sir, poore saal woh continuity maintain karna... woh mere saath nahi hua tha ki demotivate ho gaya."
This persistent effort was the key to his success, as he stayed deeply engaged with every resource provided by the platform.
"Ekdam continuity aur consistency maintain thi ekdam... lecture ko ekdam regularly follow karte the."
He found that the consistency of the platform helped him avoid common pitfalls. This clarity allowed him to focus his final months entirely on full-length mock tests, which are crucial for mastering the actual exam environment.
With a top rank almost certain, Rohan is now focusing on the final hurdle—the interviews. He is fully aware of the competitive selection criteria at top-tier research institutes.
"IISC mein 70% GATE score hai plus 30% interview…woh kai jagah hota hai."
To prepare for this, he is proactively looking for simulated interview environments to test his communication and technical depth.
"Kya mock interview session kuch hoga? Jo already job mein gaye hain unka kya experience raha."
He believes that learning from the journeys of those who have already succeeded is the most efficient way to prepare for the unexpected.
"Woh experience agar pata hai toh aapko taiyaar karna bahut easy ho jata hai."
Rohan also views his preparation as a way to contribute to the wider student community, sharing insights that make the path easier for everyone.
"Puri community ke liye rahega aisa jo bhi bachha taiyaar kar raha hai... usse cheezein pata rahengi toh preparation easy ho jata hai."
By connecting with the Physics Wallah community and mentors like Chandan Gupta Sir, he is preparing to convert his rank into a seat at his dream college.
Rohan’s rise from a 2000+ rank to a predicted AIR 14 is a blueprint for every final-year student. It proves that with the right resources, an early start, and the iron will to stay consistent, one can overcome any initial failure and reach the very top.
