GATE 2026 AIR 82 Sowmya Balaji's Journey with Physics Wallah

Every GATE journey begins with a decision, but for some students, that decision is not easy to take. Sowmya Balaji chose to leave a stable job because she wanted to build a career in VLSI instead of settling into a role that did not align with her goals.

Her determination paid off as she secured AIR 82 in GATE Instrumentation (IN) while also performing well in Electronics and Communication. Instead of following the safer path, she trusted her preparation and worked consistently with Physics Wallah to achieve the result she had aimed for.

Choosing Dreams Over Job Security: Sowmya Balaji's Career Journey

After completing her B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering from VIT Chennai in 2024, Sowmya worked for a few months. However, she soon realised that the role offered limited opportunities in the field she truly wanted to pursue.

"Mujhe VLSI mein kuch karna tha... mujhe laga skills aur develop karne chahiye... phir maine socha ek master's degree chahiye. To isiliye maine ek saal ka drop liya aur GATE ke liye prepare kiya."

Leaving a job is never an easy decision, but Sowmya understood that gaining the right skills mattered more than continuing in a role without growth. Instead of compromising on her career aspirations, she decided to dedicate an entire year to GATE preparation. Her parents supported this decision from the beginning, giving her the confidence to focus completely on her studies.

Why Returning to Studies After a Job Was Sowmya's Biggest Challenge

Preparing for GATE after working full-time meant revisiting subjects that had been left untouched for quite some time. Some concepts from the early years of engineering had faded, while others had not been covered properly during online classes.

"Mera touch ekdum chala gaya tha job ki wajah se... first second year mein jo subjects padhe the... kuch subjects online classes ki wajah se aise hi nikal gaye."

Restarting from scratch could have been overwhelming, but instead of rushing through the syllabus, Sowmya focused on rebuilding her fundamentals. She knew that strengthening concepts first would make advanced preparation much easier later. This patient approach gradually restored her confidence and prepared her for the exam.

How Physics Wallah Helped Sowmya Rebuild Her Concepts

When searching for a GATE course after leaving her job, Sowmya chose Physics Wallah's Parakram 2.0 batch after watching the free YouTube lectures.

"Parakram 2.0 dekha to maine wahi liya aur bahut achha tha... ekdum basic se... bahut detail mein samajh aa gaya mujhe."

Studying from the basics proved to be exactly what she needed after her break from academics. Along with the structured lectures, the PW Test Series became an important part of her preparation.

Certain subjects that once seemed difficult gradually became her strengths because of the way they were taught.

"College mein EDC se hum bahut darte the... but ab mere paas Chandan Sir ke notes hain aur usmein kaafi help mili."

She also appreciated how Analog Electronics became much easier to approach after learning from Siddharth Sir, while Mathematics and Control Systems were strengthened through the guidance of Puneet Sir and Pankaj Sir. Instead of memorising formulas, she developed the confidence to solve problems independently.

A Strong GATE Rank That Brought Sowmya Closer to Her VLSI Dream

Sowmya's performance in GATE opened new opportunities for higher studies in the field she had always wanted to pursue.

"Top IIT jo chhah hai... Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Hyderabad... usse related branches soch rahi hoon taki profile mera us domain mein bane."

Rather than focusing on PSU recruitment immediately, she planned to pursue an M.Tech in VLSI or related specialisations to build a stronger technical profile.

She also shared that her family felt relieved and proud after seeing the result.

"Bahut khush the mummy papa... ek saal ka drop liya tha... phir wo log kaafi khush hue."

The success validated the difficult decision she had taken months earlier and reinforced her belief that following the right career path was worth the risk.
