The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026 is famous for its strictness. While most students focus on the syllabus, many are disqualified every year before even seeing the first question—simply because they carried a "forbidden" item.
Based on the latest IIT Guwahati security protocols, here is the exhaustive, deep-dive list of banned items. If it’s on this list, keep it out of the exam center.
We all know mobile phones are banned, but the 2026 security checks are targeting micro-technology:
Smart Wearables: This includes smartwatches, fitness bands (Fitbit), and even digital watches. Only analog watches are sometimes allowed, but many centers now ban all wristwatches entirely.
Communication Gadgets: Bluetooth headsets, invisible earphones, pagers, and health-tracking rings.
Storage Devices: Pen drives, hard disks, and even "smart" pens that can record audio or scan text.
Calculators: Do not carry a physical scientific or basic calculator. Using one is an immediate ground for disqualification. Use the Virtual Calculator provided on the PC.
You are not allowed to bring your own "rough work" materials.
Strictly Banned: Geometry boxes, plastic pouches, clipboards, log tables, and whiteboards.
The Paper Rule: You cannot carry even a single blank piece of paper. Any "cheating chits" or even blank sheets found in your pocket—even if accidental—will be treated as malpractice.
What is allowed? Only a transparent blue/black ballpoint pen. The invigilators will provide a Scribble Pad, which must be returned at the end of the session.
Security uses high-sensitivity metal detectors. To avoid a stressful "pat-down," avoid these:
Jewelry: All metallic items, including rings, necklaces, earrings, nose pins, bracelets, and Karas.
Clothing Hardware: Large metal buttons, zippers, and clothes with heavy metallic embroidery or "bling."
Belts: Leather belts with large metallic buckles are a common cause of delay. Try to wear trousers that stay up without a belt (like joggers or track pants).
Charms & Threads: Metallic amulets (Tabeez) or heavy religious threads with metal pendants should be avoided if possible.
Thick-Soled Shoes: Boots or sneakers with very thick soles are scrutinized because they can hide devices. It is highly recommended to wear open sandals or flip-flops (slippers).
Wallets & Handbags: Most centers do not have a "cloakroom." Carrying a wallet or a purse is risky; keep only the cash you need in your pocket.
Headgear: Caps, hats, and mufflers are not allowed inside the lab. (Religious headgear like turbans are permitted but subject to additional security frisking).
Eatable Items: Any food, chocolate, or fruit is banned inside.
Opaque Water Bottles: You can only carry a transparent water bottle. If it has a label, peel it off before entering.
Electronic Keys: Modern car keys with remote sensors/chips are often flagged. Try to leave them with a friend outside.
