Topics-Wise Analysis In GATE Civil Engineering Exam

GATE Civil Engineering Shift 2 exam was of a moderate level and included a well-balanced combination of questions in the exam.

  • Geotechnical Engineering:
Questions included Ultimate Bearing Capacity, Consolidation (T90 calculation), Casagrande Plasticity Chart, Liquidity Index, and Bozzini Theory. Problems were mostly straightforward with some numerical calculations requiring formula application.

  • Structural Engineering:
Questions on beam reactions, internal hinges, simple RCC design, prestressed concrete stresses, and plastic analysis were included. The problems were mostly easy and based on class notes.

  • Environmental Engineering:
Questions involved air pollution control devices (cyclone separator, electrostatic precipitator, wet lime water scrubber, catalytic converter), BOD calculation, algae usefulness, and oxidation ponds. Questions were simple, matching the class materials.

  • Fluid Mechanics & Open Channel Flow (OCF):
Questions centred on uniform flow, critical depth, Manning’s equation, flow depth with doubled discharge, and flow profile calculations. Problems were considered easy to moderate.

  • Mathematics & Aptitude:
Questions included Fourier series expansions, matrix eigenvalues and determinants, logarithmic equations, and sequence patterns. The math questions appeared basic but required careful application of concepts.

  • Transportation Engineering:
Covered topics like the Greenberg model for maximum flow, valley curve calculations, and change in gradient. These were moderately difficult but manageable.

  • Design and Strength of Materials:
Questions on steel design criteria, plastic analysis, and stresses in beams were based on standard formulas and straightforward logic.
