Preparing for GATE during college is not easy. Between classes, labs, assignments, attendance, and semester exams, most students struggle to stay regular with preparation. Many students even delay preparation because they feel there is still enough time left.
Suryansh Tiwari’s journey began in a very similar way. A student from NIT Jamshedpur, he did not start with perfect discipline or a strict timetable. But slowly, with consistency, smart preparation, and Physics Wallah’s support, he transformed his preparation journey and secured AIR 94 in GATE Civil 2026.
Like many students, Suryansh joined a GATE batch early but was not completely serious about preparation in the beginning. At that stage, college life felt manageable, and the exam still seemed far away.
As he shared:
“Sir. To batch to maine sir second semester mein liya tha. Par us samay to bas batch liya tha. To padhai tha ki bahut time bacha hua hai. Aaram se karenge.”
This phase is relatable for many students because preparation often starts casually during the early semesters. Since the exam feels distant, students usually think there is enough time left.
But slowly, the pressure started becoming real. As semesters passed, Suryansh realised that delaying preparation further could become risky.
“To aise karte-karte third semester mein thoda-thoda padhai kiye lekin phir fourth semester aa gaya matlab ek hi saal bacha tha GATE ke liye to ab laga ki ab nahi padhenge to 2025 ke liye kaafi late ho jayega.”
This became the major turning point in his preparation journey. Instead of waiting for the “perfect time”, he finally decided to prepare seriously and stay consistent.
“To like fourth semester se maine like seriously preparation shuru kar di to uske baad se continuously matlab do saal tak poora padhai kiya.”
That consistency across two years later became one of the biggest reasons behind his AIR 94.
One important part of Suryansh’s journey was that he appeared for GATE during third year itself. Even though the result was not extraordinary, the experience became extremely valuable for him later.
Talking about his earlier attempt, he said:
“Yes sir usmein mera kya tha 623 tha sir.”
For many students, such a result could become discouraging. But instead of losing confidence, Suryansh used that attempt as a learning experience. He understood the actual exam pressure, the importance of revision, and the areas where improvement was needed.
That earlier attempt helped him understand how much practice and consistency are actually required to secure a top rank.
During his earlier preparation phase, Suryansh’s focus was mainly on completing subjects. But after analysing his first attempt, he realised that completing theory alone was not enough.
There were still important gaps left in preparation.
As he explained:
“Sir 2025 mein to sir mera basic aim tha ki maximum subjects complete ho jaye par ek RCC mere se chhoot gaya tha.”
This time, he did not want incomplete preparation to affect his result again.
“2026 mein RCC karke gaya tha.”
Along with syllabus completion, his preparation approach also changed completely. Instead of only studying theory, he started giving maximum time to practice.
“To wo tha aur main chahta tha ki practice achhe se karna hai. Matlab theory to ek baari padh liye. Ab iske baad hai ji jitna time hai wo practice ko de do.”
This shift became extremely important in his preparation journey. Physics Wallah’s PYQ practice and test support helped him continue revising regularly instead of simply moving from one subject to another.
Talking about his preparation routine, he said:
“PYQs maine aur multiple times kiye. Maine aur kahin se kuch questions lagaye. Test series thi aur jo purane questions the usi ko dobara padhta gaya.”
Repeated revision became one of the strongest parts of his preparation.
Even when the process started feeling repetitive, he still continued because he understood the importance of memory and revision during exams.
“Matlab PYQ baar-baar hi karta gaya. Bore bore lag raha tha lekin phir bhi dobara kiya usko kyunki yaad hoga tabhi achhe se ban payega exam mein.”
This mindset of revising even when preparation feels boring is one of the biggest habits seen among top rankers.
Instead of directly jumping into full-length mock tests, Suryansh first focused on topic-wise preparation. This helped him improve weak areas properly before moving towards bigger tests.
As he explained:
“Nahi sir pehle to topic test hi diye the.”
Starting with topic tests gave him better confidence and stronger subject-level understanding.
He also began attempting tests early enough to leave time for improvement.
“To wo to November ya October se start kar diya tha.”
At the same time, semester exams and college workload were also happening together. But instead of stopping preparation completely, he kept revision and practice active alongside college work.
“Par uske baad se test test aur practice ye saath mein chalta raha. Test practice aur notes revision ye saath mein chalta raha.”
That balance between tests, notes revision, and regular practice helped him remain connected with preparation till the final exam.
One of the most relatable parts of Suryansh’s journey is how he managed preparation during college life. Most students feel there is never enough time because of labs, classes, practicals, and internal exams.
Suryansh faced the same challenges.
But instead of waiting for free time to appear automatically, he adjusted his routine according to his schedule.
Talking about his study routine after college hours, he shared:
“Sir jab lab hota tha to aake main pehle thoda rest karta tha taaki mind thoda sa kaam rahe aur uske baad main poora apna prep padhai start karta tha.”
This shows that maintaining energy and mental freshness was also important during preparation.
Another major support during this phase was PW’s recorded lecture system. Since attending every live class during college was difficult, recorded lectures helped him study according to his own routine.
“Majorly to main poora saara cheez recorded pe hi dekha kyunki live utna ho nahi paaya tha.”
This flexibility helped him continue preparation even during hectic college schedules without missing important subjects.
Suryansh also used his vacations very smartly. Instead of treating holidays as complete breaks from studies, he used them to move ahead in the syllabus.
As he explained:
“Summer vacations aur winter vacations kaafi important ho jaate hain kyunki usmein college se utna kuch rehta nahi hai.”
This extra time became extremely valuable for his preparation.
One particular summer vacation helped him complete a large part of the syllabus.
“Jo mera fourth semester ke baad wala jo fourth aur fifth ke beech ka jo summer vacation tha usmein maine apna kaafi zyada syllabus complete kiya tha.”
During that phase, he completed several important subjects together.
“Maths, Environment, Fluid Mechanics, Railways, RT ye poora subject maine us time hi complete kiya tha.”
This shows how properly using vacations can significantly improve preparation speed during college.
Engineering Mathematics and Aptitude play an important role in improving GATE scores. For Suryansh, Physics Wallah faculty support became very helpful in strengthening these sections.
Talking about Mathematics preparation, he shared:
“Maths ke liye to sir Puneet sir bahut achha padhaye hain. Matlab sab cheez complete hai.”
Good conceptual understanding, combined with regular PYQ practice improved his confidence gradually.
“Aur uske baad PYQ bana lete the to matlab aisa koi question nahi tha jo nahi ban sakta hai.”
Similarly, Aptitude preparation also became a strong area for him.
“Aur aptitude bhi sir ne bahut achha padhaya tha.”
These scoring sections later contributed significantly towards his final result.
Many students completely skip low-weightage subjects during preparation. Suryansh avoided making that mistake.
Instead of ignoring subjects fully, he at least prepared formulas, concepts, and important topics from every subject.
As he explained:
“Aisa to bilkul nahi kiye the. Poora chhod diye ho.”
This balanced preparation helped him attempt questions from almost the entire syllabus during the exam.
Even after preparing seriously, Suryansh was still unsure about how high his rank would go. Like many aspirants, he also had self-doubt before the results.
As he honestly admitted:
“Mere ko laga nahi tha ki like achha rank aa payega utna.”
But the final result turned out much better than expected.
Sharing his final score, he said:
“Normalisation ke baad 77.08 hai.”
That score finally helped him secure AIR 94 in GATE Civil 2026.
Naturally, the result became a proud and emotional moment for his family as well.
“Papa mummy to kaafi khush the ki 94 aa gaya.”
All the recorded lectures, repeated PYQs, revisions, practice sessions, and consistent effort had finally paid off.
After securing AIR 94, Suryansh’s next focus shifted towards PSU opportunities and interview preparation.
Talking about his plans, he shared:
“PSUs ka hi taiyari hai sir. Is rank pe majority of the PSUs ke call aa jaane chahiye.”
With a strong GATE rank already secured, he has now started preparing for the next phase of his career.
“To ab uske liye interview ka preparation start kar raha hoon.”
His journey is now moving towards even bigger opportunities ahead.
Suryansh Tiwari’s journey feels inspiring because it is realistic and relatable. He was managing college life, labs, semester pressure, and preparation together, just like thousands of other students preparing for GATE. What made the difference was consistency, repeated practice, smart revision, and proper guidance. Throughout this journey, Physics Wallah supported him with structured batches, recorded lectures, PYQ practice, test series, revision support, and subject guidance that helped him stay consistent during college itself.
From AIR 623 in an earlier attempt to AIR 94 in GATE Civil 2026, Suryansh Tiwari’s story proves that disciplined preparation and the right learning support can completely transform results.
