Ritik Singh from Siddharth Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, completed his BTech in Electrical Engineering from HBTU Kanpur in 2024. He started preparing for GATE during college but could not achieve the rank he wanted in his first attempt.
After taking a drop, using PW resources and improving his preparation, Ritik secured a strong GATE rank and later appeared for PSU opportunities. His preparation eventually helped him clear the NPCIL selection process.
His journey shows that one unsuccessful attempt does not decide your career. Consistent preparation, revision, PYQs, and strong subject knowledge can create opportunities across multiple competitive exams.
Ritik began preparing for GATE while pursuing his BTech in Electrical Engineering. However, his preparation during college was limited because he also had projects and other academic responsibilities.
“GATE ki preparation start ki thi 2024, matlab college mein hi start kar di thi thodi bahut padhni, aur sir matlab PW se hi maine sir aapke Power System wagairah bhi aap hi se padhe the sir.”
His first GATE attempt did not give him the result he wanted. Instead of treating the result as the end of his preparation, he decided to give himself more time and prepare seriously after graduation.
After his first GATE attempt, Ritik decided to take a year to improve his preparation. He already had notes from his earlier preparation, which helped him restart without beginning everything from zero.
He also used test series and focused on improving his overall performance. This preparation helped him secure a much better GATE rank in the following attempt.
“Phir maine ek saal drop kiya, phir sir mere paas notes wagairah the to maine wahi test series wagairah PW ki test series bhi usmein use kiya tha.”
The journey was not completely smooth. After getting a good GATE rank, Ritik initially expected that he might get a PSU opportunity and stopped studying for a few months. Later, an interview experience made him realise that he needed to rebuild his preparation.
PW Online Resources remained a part of Ritik’s preparation from his college days through his later GATE preparation. He used PW Lectures, notes and test series while building his subject knowledge.
“PW se hi maine sir aapke Power System wagairah bhi aap hi se padhe the sir.”
Ritik also found the Power System notes useful during his PSU interview preparation. The concepts covered during his preparation helped him answer questions related to Electrical Engineering fundamentals.
“Aapke notes Power System ke ekdum achhe se padhe the sir... usmein sir jo aapne basics mein bataya hai na starting mein sir usse to bahut saare questions sir unhone matlab direct wahi se same cheezein pooch rahe the.”
This shows why understanding concepts can be more useful than simply collecting study material.
As his syllabus progressed, Ritik focused on making short notes instead of depending only on lengthy class notes. He believed that short notes were easier to revise closer to the examination.
“Notes hamare ban gaye. Ab hamein usi notes se dekh ke hamein short notes banane hain kyunki sir exam time pe to hamare short notes hi hamein kaam aayenge.”
He also gave strong importance to Previous Year Questions. According to Ritik, PYQs helped him understand which topics were repeatedly asked and which concepts deserved more attention.
“PYQ basically sabse zyada focus hamein PYQ pe karna hai kyunki sir agar PYQ achhe se kiye rahenge to exam mein matlab GATE mein to kaafi help milta hai sir PYQ se.”
By the final stage of his preparation, he relied heavily on these short notes for revision.
“Main to sir last ke ek do mahine kuch padha hi nahi tha notes se. Bas short notes padh ke gaya tha exam dene.”
Ritik's preparation was not limited to solving numerical questions. His interview experiences taught him the importance of understanding the theory behind every topic.
He explained that questions in PSU interviews can come directly from the basic concepts covered during preparation.
“Nahi sir matlab bahut enough hai. More than enough hai sir wo notes wagairah aapke sir bahut more than enough hai sir agar class achhe se attend kar liya humne aur khud sir notes aisa nahi hai ki sir matlab ki jo downloaded notes hai wahi padha agar hum class mein achhe se attend karke khud ka notes bana rahe hain to sir mujhe lagta hai kisi bhi exam ke liye more than sufficient hai sir.”
His own interview experience reinforced this point. Questions from Power System basics were asked directly during his interviews.
“Ek ek do question to seedhe jaise-jaise aapne likhaya tha jaise Isolator, Load Interrupter kab use karte hain? Seedhe-seedhe interview mein mere se pooch liya tha sir.”
This helped him understand that preparation for a written exam and an interview should go together.
For Electrical Engineering students, Ritik believes that core subjects such as Power System, Electrical Machines and Power Electronics deserve special attention.
Based on his interview experiences, most of the questions he faced came from these subjects.
“Aapko mostly 99% questions sir usi se pooche jaate hain. Power System se, Machine se aur agar kuch bacha to Power Electronics. Inhi teenon subject se pooche jaate hain.”
He had appeared for multiple interviews and repeatedly noticed the importance of Power System and other core subjects.
“Jahan tak maine do baar sir BARC ka interview diya hai, do baar NPCIL ka diya hai, hamesha sir same interview mein har baar Power System hi poocha hai.”
For students targeting PSU recruitment, this makes core subject preparation important even after the written examination.
Ritik specifically highlighted the importance of Power System basics and protection-related concepts during his interviews. Questions were not limited to formulas or numerical problems.
He was asked practical and conceptual questions related to power generation, transformer protection, isolators, and circuit breakers.
“Sir main bata raha hoon abhi mera interview start hua tha to unhone sabse pehle mere se yahi pooch liya ki yahan pe generation kitne volt pe ho raha hai?”
He also faced questions related to transformer protection and electrical equipment.
“Protection se unhone transformer ke protection ke baare mein pooch liya tha mere se ki matlab kaun-kaun sa protection aap transformer mein use kar rahe ho. Phir sir unhone Isolator aur Circuit Breaker ke baare mein pooch liya tha.”
These experiences helped Ritik understand that detailed theory can make a difference during PSU interviews.
Ritik did not recommend collecting study material from multiple teachers or platforms. Instead, he believed that students should choose one reliable source and study it thoroughly.
“Koi ek ek cheez follow karo aap, lekin usko poora achhe se follow karo. Mujhe nahi lagta ki aap 10 jagah kood ke bhi 10 jagah kood ke bhi aapko utni knowledge nahi hogi jitna aap ek cheez ko agar depth mein padh ke aapko utni knowledge ho jayegi.”
He also emphasised that studying from too many teachers does not automatically lead to better understanding.
“Aap ek teacher se padho sahi se padho focus focus achhe se rahe aapka to mujhe lagta hai ki aap kar loge sir.”
For him, depth and consistency mattered more than the number of resources collected.
Ritik's preparation for GATE also helped him prepare for other technical competitive examinations. He believed that a strong understanding of the GATE syllabus can provide a foundation for exams conducted by organisations such as BARC, ISRO and other PSUs.
He shared his own experience of appearing for BARC without a separate preparation period.
“Agar aap ek baar GATE ka achhe se syllabus go through ho ja rahe hain to aapko ye sab exams to aaram se nikal jaane chahiye.”
He further explained that strong conceptual knowledge and numerical practice can make other exams comparatively manageable.
“Agar aapki knowledge achhi hai, depth achha hai to theory portion aapne achhe se cover kiya hai. Saath-saath numerical practice bhi achhe se kara hai to ye sab exam to sir matlab GATE ke aage matlab sir thode matlab easy padenge aapko.”
This approach helped him view GATE preparation as a foundation for several career opportunities instead of preparing separately for every examination.
Ritik faced uncertainty, setbacks and periods when his preparation stopped. What helped him continue was thinking about the kind of life he wanted in the future.
He believed that students should focus less on the number of candidates or vacancies and more on what they can achieve through consistent effort.
“Agar aapko sahi mein matlab karna hai to sir matlab sochna matlab ye hai ki aapko mehnat to karni padegi sir bina mehnat ke to sir nahi ho paayega.”
He also explained how thinking about future financial stability kept him motivated.
“Future life jahan par hum pahunch jayenge jahan hum dream karte hain ya jahan hum jaana chahte hain wahan se hamari life ek change aa jayega sir.”
This mindset helped him continue preparing even after setbacks.
Ritik's biggest advice to students is to avoid being distracted by competition and the number of vacancies. Instead, students should focus on building strong concepts and preparing consistently.
“Ye nahi sochna hai ki kam seat hai. Aap apni preparation karenge to nikal jayega. Mujhe lagta hai sir GATE pe focus karein.”
He also advised students to avoid jumping between multiple resources.
“Agar aap karna chahte ho to GATE ka syllabus padho. GATE achhe se karo. Aapko bahut saari opportunities milengi.”
For students preparing for PSU interviews, he recommended balancing numerical practice with theory.
“GATE mein basically numerical practice pe zyada dhyan dena hai. Phir agar interview aa gaya to theory portion achhe se karna hai. Par jab abhi hum padh rahe hain starting mein to hamein dono achhe se karna hai.”
Ritik's journey ultimately highlights the value of focused preparation, PYQs, short notes, strong core subjects and patience. His experience of moving through setbacks and multiple opportunities before clearing NPCIL can motivate aspirants who are still waiting for their breakthrough.
