When Ashutosh saw that his previous GATE attempt didn’t go as planned, he knew he had a choice to make: settle for a placement or take a bold step to improve. Instead of giving up, he decided to take a drop year, focus entirely on his preparation, and fix the gaps that held him back. This decision set the stage for an inspiring journey of dedication and strategy.
With the right guidance from Physics Wallah, including focused lectures, Daily Practice Problems, and doubt-solving support, he gradually strengthened his concepts, built confidence, and stayed consistent. For Ashutosh, the drop year was about growth, learning, and becoming a better engineer, not just increasing marks.
"Sir, first of all, mujhe ek matlab better engineer banna hai bhale hi matlab mujhe achha offer mil jaye placement ke through.”
“Phir bhi mujhe matlab abhi ye learning ka phase hai meri life me to mai abhi do saal aur de sakta hu masters ke liye."
He was willing to invest extra time to master concepts, recognising that true learning is more valuable than a quick placement.
Ashutosh followed a systematic approach combining lectures, previous year questions (PYQs), and Daily Practice Problems (DPPs) to ensure thorough preparation.
"To sir first of all, maine to lecture se start kiya tha kyunki mujhe matlab basics bhi clear nahi the us time.”
Since he hadn’t focused much on studies during college, Ashutosh began with lectures to clarify the basics, then moved on to practice questions.
“Kyunki mere college ke time pe maine itna focus kiya nahi tha studies pe to maine pehle lecture dekhe uske baad fir jo apni DPP aati thi wo lagayi.”
He kept his practice manageable, focusing on PYQs multiple times instead of getting distracted by extra questions.
“Uske alawa fir PYQs ke alawa maine koi extra question par jyada focus nahi kiya. Bas apne jo PYQs hai unko teen se chaar bar kiye hai."
Initially, his test scores were moderate but steadily improved with regular practice.
"Initially mere sir 50 to 60 ki range me aa rahe the, lekin end tak end aate tak mere approximately 70–75 aa jaane lage."
This demonstrates that gradual improvement through consistent practice is a key factor in success.
Even highly motivated students like Ashutosh face periods of demotivation, especially when they see peers solving questions more easily. During these months, it can be challenging to maintain focus and confidence.
"Beech me teen char months aise the jab mai bhi matlab bahut demotivated tha kyunki mere friends jisse mai GATE ke related jo baatein chalti thi unme mai dekhta tha ki wo achhe se question kar pa rahe hai."
Despite these feelings, Ashutosh kept his consistency intact, understanding that effort matters more than temporary setbacks.
"To mai us waqt demotivated tha ki mera is baar hoga ki nahi hoga. Thodi anxiety thi lekin mai consistency maintain karke chal raha tha ki matlab hoga ya nahi hoga wo alag baat hai."
To strengthen his discipline, he joined a library, creating a dedicated space free from distractions, where he could study 6–8 hours daily without interruptions.
"Lekin roz kam se kam 6–8 hours to padhna hai aur maine uske liye ek library join kar li thi."
"Matlab mere town me to waha pe matlab jaake study ke alawa koi option nahi tha. To waha bas study karna rehta tha. To 6–8 hours bas aapko consistently study karna hai, matlab kisi bhi halat me aapko wo rokna nahi hai."
By establishing a structured study environment, Ashutosh was able to overcome anxiety, stay disciplined, and maintain the consistency that ultimately contributed to his top GATE rank.
Ashutosh shares how Physics Wallah (PW) helped him structure his preparation effectively, making it both affordable and comprehensive. The platform offered him Daily Practice Problems (DPPs), weekly tests, and direct doubt resolution, which were crucial for mastering concepts and building confidence.
"Maine mostly matlab DPP solve ki thi aur maine PW join kiya tha kyunki ye cost effective tha over other platforms.”
“Aur baaki mujhe full help mili hai, matlab teacher se. Jab mai Telegram pe connect karta tha to wo personally doubt bhi solve kar dete the."
This shows that having access to proper guidance and timely doubt resolution can significantly reduce confusion and help students stay on track.
"DPPs help karte hai kyunki aapko har week ya chapter ke end me questions milte hai. Taki aap log us chapter ko complete karne ke baad usse related questions practice kar pao. Definitely help karte hai."
DPPs reinforced his learning immediately after each chapter, allowing him to identify weak areas and practice relevant problems. This kind of structured practice ensures that concepts stick, making exam preparation more efficient and focused.
Many students face the dilemma of choosing between placements and focused preparation for competitive exams. For Ashutosh, deciding to take a drop year was a crucial step in his GATE journey.
"Exactly jab maine last time GATE di thi to usme matlab mujhe failure achieve hua tha."
Even after facing failure, he immediately restarted preparation as soon as the results were out. His focus was on maintaining consistency in every condition, regardless of initial outcomes.
"To uske baad maine matlab jaise hi result aaya tha maine wapas se prepare karna start kar diya tha.”
"Mera bas ek hi message hai ki consistency kisi bhi halat me aapko maintain karni hai.”
“Agar wo link toot gayi to fir aap matlab itna achha perform nahi kar paoge.”
“Lekin aap consistent rahe aur aapko under confident hai, agar aap fir bhi consistent hai to at the end aap result achieve kar paoge aapke desire."
Even when confidence wavered, staying disciplined ensured long-term success.
"Aap consistent raho, discipline raho, aur result ke bare me na socho initially.”
“Agar confidence nahi bhi aa raha hai, achha result nahi aa raha hai, fir bhi aap consistently bas mehnat karte raho.”
Ashutosh’s approach demonstrates that true success comes from consistency, discipline, and trusting the process, even when immediate results or confidence may not be on your side.
His journey proves that success is the result of sustained effort, strategic preparation, and the right mentorship. With Physics Wallah’s guidance, Ashutosh converted failure into AIR 39, demonstrating the power of determination, discipline, and smart preparation.
