Pothuri Raju's achievement of AIR 7 in GATE 2026 is particularly inspiring as he prepared diligently while managing a demanding job with the Indian Railways. His success serves as a powerful example for other working professionals aiming for similar ambitious goals.
Pothuri Raju, hailing from Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, currently works with the Indian Railways in Bhubaneswar. His motivation for pursuing GATE stemmed from an unfulfilled ambition to achieve M.Tech. He possessed confidence in his technical preparation and sought to validate his knowledge and capability through the challenging GATE examination.
Raju began by consolidating his existing short notes. For subjects lacking detailed notes, he extensively used YouTube crash course videos. Specifically, for subjects like EDC, he created notes from Kamesh Sir's Maharevision sessions on Physics Wallah, as he did not have pre-existing short notes for these. He focused on identifying and addressing his weak topics within the GATE syllabus through dedicated videos and resources.
His preparation commenced with stronger subjects such as Signal, Analog, and Digital, which he revised swiftly. He strategically avoided tackling core subjects like EDC, Communication, and EMT initially, aiming to build early confidence.
Test series were crucial for assessing understanding, measuring retention, and developing exam temperament. Raju enrolled in the PW Test Series. After completing each subject, he took topic-wise tests and subject-wise tests.
Around December, he progressed to full-length tests, which were offered weekly by PW on Sundays. Joining Physics Wallah's Rankers Club after qualifying its exam provided challenging questions and critical insight into the competition level and his standing relative to other aspirants, further boosting his confidence.
Balancing a demanding role with the Indian Railways, which included half-day work on Saturdays, Raju adopted a structured study schedule.
On weekdays (Monday-Friday), he dedicated 2-3 hours each evening.
Weekends (Saturday-Sunday) allowed for extended study time of 5-6 hours.
Occasionally, he utilized some time during office hours for preparation. He stressed that success while working relies on effective time management and a strong internal desire to achieve goals, rather than finding excuses.
Raju emphasizes establishing conceptual clarity for every subject first, an approach beneficial in the long run. Aspirants should focus on mastering concepts rather than fixating on achieving a specific rank initially. Strong concepts naturally lead to intuitive question-solving.
While Previous Year Questions (PYQs) are important, test series are the main tool for developing exam temperament, learning how to approach questions under pressure, and simulating the actual exam environment. Concentrating on taking test series is highly recommended.
Working professionals should optimize limited time, especially on weekdays. Weekends and holidays must be maximized for study. The focus should be on achieving maximum output from minimum study time. Leveraging resources like short notes, Maharevision, crash courses, test series, and Rankers Club provides a holistic preparation approach.
Raju affirms that success is primarily driven by an internal desire and vision, proving that if preparation is achievable with a demanding Railways job, it is possible with any job.
