Kushagra pursued his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from BITS Pilani, driven by an initial interest in Physics and Maths. During his fourth year, a Practice School opportunity at the National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) allowed him to complete his bachelor's thesis in the Structural Technological Divisions. This experience was fundamental, enhancing his understanding of research methodologies and exposing him to esteemed scientists.
Following graduation, he gained first-hand practical experience in an aerospace firm. This practical exposure further solidified his passion for the field. He chose GATE XE because it is a fundamental examination with concept-based and research-oriented questions, aligning perfectly with his desire for further study and research in aerospace.
With his exceptional achievement in GATE XE, Kushagra plans to pursue further studies. He is primarily considering IISc due to its reputation in research. His academic and career aspirations lie within Aerospace Engineering or potentially Robotics and Autonomous Systems, reflecting his deep interest in these advanced fields.
Kushagra describes the research and industry culture as very open, offering considerable opportunities to explore and learn. A significant aspect of his development was gaining first-hand practical experience. He distinguishes between theoretically understanding concepts and practically observing and working with them. His experience working with real hardware proved to be a major advantage and a pivotal experience that profoundly shaped his career direction.
Kushagra prepared for GATE XE concurrently with his job, rather than resigning first. He acknowledges that managing both can be challenging. His success was partly due to a significant overlap between his job responsibilities and the GATE XE syllabus.
Working in a core sector relevant to his studies meant that knowledge from work was applicable to the exam, making his preparation somewhat easier. For those without such direct overlap, he suggests utilizing weekends or studying after work hours, such as after a 9-to-5 shift.
Kushagra was part of the Vijay batch on Gatewallah, which he credits for providing a "sharpening" effect, particularly in problem-solving. For top performers, the focus shifts from basic theoretical concepts to mastering problem-solving, which is highly relevant for GATE XE given its difficult problems.
He strongly emphasizes the importance of Previous Year Questions (PYQs). He thoroughly analyzed the paper pattern and question types from the last two to three years. Solving these PYQs allowed him to gain good control over the exam format and typical questions.
When considering whether consistency or intelligence is more vital for clearing a demanding exam like GATE, Kushagra states that both are important. Intelligence aids in understanding concepts more easily, while consistency ensures that one will eventually achieve their goal.
His ability to maintain consistency while working was facilitated by the significant overlap in syllabus and field between his job and the GATE XE exam. Working in an aerospace company meant that subjects like Solid Mechanics and Fluid Mechanics were fundamental to both his professional role and the exam, creating a mutually beneficial learning environment. He also dedicated additional study time after office hours.
For future aspirants aiming for a top rank in GATE XE, Kushagra's most crucial advice is to focus on the concepts and study them in depth. He stresses that if one's concepts are strong and they have a good hold over their subjects, they will be able to solve even the most challenging questions.
Therefore, conceptual clarity is the key to GATE XE, as its questions are fundamentally oriented. While Mechanical Engineering might have comparatively easier questions in some subjects, GATE XE typically presents tougher problems, demanding in-depth knowledge and a robust conceptual understanding for effective problem-solving.
