The GATE 2026 result has been officially declared by IIT Guwahati, bringing excitement and inspiration for lakhs of aspirants across India. Among the top achievers, PW student Prabal Srivastava secured an outstanding All India Rank 2 (AIR 2) in Environmental Science (ES), making his journey a strong example of smart strategy and consistent effort. His success highlights how the right planning, subject selection, and disciplined preparation can help students achieve top ranks in GATE.
Mr. Prabal Srivastava, from Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, completed his engineering at I.T. DAVV. This marked his third GATE attempt, graduating in the 2025 batch. His performance in Civil Engineering demonstrated a consistent improvement in rank over multiple attempts: achieving AIR 3000 in his third year, AIR 1200 in his fourth year, and AIR 370 in the current year.
Prabal initially hesitated about attempting Environmental Science (ES), concerned it might affect his Civil Engineering performance. However, a last-minute decision, involving filling the form on the final day with a late fee, led to him securing All India Rank 2 (AIR 2) in Environmental Science.
His rationale for attempting ES was strategic: the Environmental Science exam was scheduled before Civil Engineering. This provided an early insight into the Math & Aptitude section for the year's papers, which helped reduce anxiety for his subsequent Civil Engineering exam.
Most of the Environmental Science syllabus is common with Civil Engineering subjects. Key common areas include:
Fluid Mechanics
Environmental Engineering
Only a few specific subjects are unique to Environmental Science, which can be covered in a relatively short period. Minimal extra time was specifically allotted for Environmental Science preparation; the additional syllabus was covered incrementally over two to three months before the exam.
Teachers often recommend Environmental Science over XE (Engineering Sciences) for Civil Engineering students due to several advantages:
M.Tech Course Alignment: Environmental Science M.Tech programs are more closely aligned with Civil Engineering than XE.
Syllabus Familiarity: The Environmental Science syllabus is perceived as more familiar and connected to a Civil Engineering background, reducing the need to prepare entirely new subjects, unlike XE.
Prabal prepared through online coaching using the PW GATE platform. He joined the Parakram batch in his third year and continued with the same content through renewals.
Total cost of preparation was around ₹8000 for 3 years.
Online learning provided flexibility and quality content.
Dedicated Environmental Science batch helped a lot.
He strongly believes that expensive coaching is not necessary. Success depends on consistency, not on high-cost resources.
Prabal's immediate plans involve seeking PSUs (Public Sector Undertakings) through his Civil Engineering rank. He has also appeared for other exams like BARC and expects an interview. His primary career goal is to secure a job.
Environmental Science offers excellent opportunities for pursuing M.Tech at top IITs. It is an emerging branch with significant career potential post-M.Tech. However, PSU opportunities are generally more limited for Environmental Science compared to Civil Engineering. Environmental Science can serve as a strategic advantage for M.Tech admissions, especially for students (like third-year students or droppers) who may not have strong Civil Engineering preparation, as it can be comparatively easier to secure an IIT M.Tech seat through this path.
Consistent and sustained effort is crucial for securing a good rank. Aspirants should approach preparation with energy, enthusiasm, and excitement. Prabal believes that if one is not genuinely happy and enthusiastic about what they are doing, success will be elusive. The excitement to wake up and work hard in one's chosen field is paramount. GATE success does not require anything "extraordinary"; traditional methods combined with consistent dedication lead to good ranks.
