How Many Attempts for JEE Main 2027? Sessions, Eligibility & Attempt Rules

Students often confuse the number of JEE Main sessions held in a year with their total number of attempts. JEE Main is expected to be conducted in two sessions each year, while eligible candidates can appear for the examination across three consecutive years based on their Class 12 qualifying year.

The number of sessions available in each year determines the session-wise opportunities. NTA will finalise the qualifying years, number of sessions and applicable attempt rules for JEE Main 2027 through the official Information Bulletin.

How Many Times Can You Appear for JEE Main?

Your overall opportunities to appear for JEE Main are linked to the years in which you remain eligible, rather than a fixed lifetime attempt limit. The Class 12 qualifying year is an important factor in determining this eligibility.

  • Two sessions in a year: You can appear in both JEE Main sessions if you meet the eligibility conditions.

  • One session: You may choose to appear in only one session.

  • Multiple examination years: You can appear in JEE Main in subsequent years only if you continue to meet NTA's qualifying-year and other eligibility conditions.

  • Class 12 passing year: The year in which you first pass Class 12 or an equivalent examination is considered for determining eligibility.

  • Improvement examination: Appearing for a Class 12 improvement examination does not reset your original passing year.

JEE Main Attempts Based on Class 12 Passing Year

NTA will announce the qualifying years for JEE Main 2027. You can use the 2026 criteria only to understand how the eligibility period is determined.

To be confirmed by NTA

Candidates who had passed Class 12 in 2023 or earlier were not eligible for JEE Main 2026. NTA also clarified that the first year in which a candidate's Class 12 result was declared as passed is treated as the passing year, even if the candidate later appears for improvement.

Important Points About JEE Main 2027 Attempts

Keep these points in mind when planning your JEE Main attempts, particularly if you are considering appearing in both sessions or in future examination years.

  • Two sessions mean two opportunities in 2027: An eligible student can appear in both sessions.

  • Both sessions are optional: You can appear in one session or use both opportunities.

  • Sessions do not mean separate eligibility years: Appearing in both sessions does not use two years of eligibility.

  • Passing year matters: Your original Class 12 passing year is considered for year-wise eligibility.

  • Improvement does not restart eligibility: A later improvement examination does not create a new passing year.

  • 2027 rules are not final: NTA will confirm the applicable qualifying years and attempt conditions.

JEE Main 2027 is expected to offer two examination sessions so that eligible students can appear in one or both. Your opportunities in subsequent years will depend on the qualifying year and eligibility conditions announced by NTA.
