JEE Main 2027 Eligibility for Foreign Boards

Students completing Class 12 outside India may have a different board, grading system and qualification structure from the Indian 10+2 system. This can make it important to establish whether your qualification is recognised as equivalent before applying for JEE Main.

For JEE Main 2027, the final requirements will be confirmed by NTA in the official Information Bulletin. The existing framework recognises a Class XII or equivalent examination conducted outside India when it is recognised as equivalent to the 10+2 system by AIU.

Which Foreign Board Qualifications Are Accepted for JEE Main?

NTA's qualifying-examination list includes several recognised international qualifications. The 2026 framework specifically mentioned GCE Advanced A Level, Cambridge High School Certificate and the International Baccalaureate Diploma, along with other foreign examinations recognised as equivalent to 10+2.

Examples include:

  • GCE Advanced Level: General Certificate of Education examinations conducted through London, Cambridge or Sri Lanka at the Advanced A Level.

  • Cambridge qualification: High School Certificate Examination of Cambridge University.

  • International Baccalaureate: International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.

  • Other foreign boards: A Class XII or equivalent examination conducted outside India may also be considered if it is recognised as equivalent to the Indian 10+2 system through the applicable AIU process.

Candidates should check the official JEE Main 2027 Information Bulletin and the applicable AIU equivalence requirements for the latest list of accepted foreign-board qualifications and any additional conditions.

When Is an AIU Equivalence Certificate Required for JEE Main?

If your Class XII or equivalent qualification is from a foreign board, you may need to establish that it is equivalent to the Indian Class XII qualification. The requirement depends on the nature and recognition of your foreign qualification.

  • Foreign qualification: An AIU equivalence certificate may be required when your Class XII or equivalent qualification was completed outside India, and its equivalence with the Indian 10+2 system needs to be established.

  • Qualification not specifically listed: If your foreign examination is not among the qualifications recognised by NTA, you may need equivalence certification.

  • Admission verification: The certificate may also be required if an institute asks for proof that your foreign qualification is equivalent to Class XII.

Note: The exact documentation requirements will be confirmed by NTA for JEE Main 2027 based on your qualification and the applicable rules.

Important Points for JEE Main 2027 Foreign Board Candidates

Foreign-board students should check both examination eligibility and the admission requirements of the institutes they intend to join.

  • Check equivalence early: Do not wait until the admission stage if your qualification may require AIU recognition.

  • Verify subjects: Make sure your foreign-board qualification contains the subjects required for your chosen JEE Main paper.

  • Keep academic records: Preserve official certificates, marksheets and grade records.

  • Check institute requirements: Individual institutes may have additional eligibility conditions.

  • Follow the 2027 bulletin: NTA will confirm the final foreign-board requirements for JEE Main 2027.
