Opening and Closing Ranks in JoSAA are the ranking systems for students to get admission in a particular college and course, depending on the category in a specific counselling round.
Opening Rank is the highest-ranked candidate who secured admission to a particular course, institute, category, and quota in a specific counselling round.
Closing Rank is the last rank at which admission was offered for a specific institute, branch, category, and quota combination.

The cutoff ranks are published separately for different student groups. It is very important to understand how these ranks are displayed:
Open Category: These ranks are displayed in the Common Rank List (CRL) format.
EWS Category: Ranks are shown using the specific Gen-EWS category rank list.
OBC-NCL Category: Ranks are shown using the official OBC category rank list.
SC Category: Cutoffs are listed using the Scheduled Caste category ranks.
ST Category: Cutoffs are listed using the Scheduled Tribe category ranks.
PwD Category: Persons with Disabilities cutoffs are calculated and displayed separately within their respective groups.
Important Note: Open ranks are always shown in CRL. EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, and ST ranks are shown in their respective category ranks. PwD cutoffs are displayed separately.
The Home State Quota is a special rule where 50% of the total seats in an NIT are kept reserved only for students who completed their 12th class exams in that same state.
The Other State Quota applies to the remaining 50% of the seats in an NIT. These seats are filled by students coming from all the other states and union territories of India.
Home State candidates benefit much more because the closing ranks for the Home State quota are usually much lower. This means a student can get a good seat in their home NIT even with a higher rank, while an outside student would need a much better rank for the exact same seat. For example, at NIT Trichy or NIT Warangal, local state candidates secure seats at ranks where outside state options close much earlier.
The cutoff ranks change every year because of these six main reasons:
Number of Candidates: If more students pass the JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams, the competition increases.
Seat Availability: If colleges add new seats or new branches, the closing ranks can drop, making it easier to get a seat.
Institute Popularity: Top colleges like IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi are always in high demand, so their closing ranks stay very low.
Branch Demand: Currently, courses like CSE and AI are highly preferred, which makes their cutoffs very strict.
Difficulty Level of JEE Main and JEE Advanced: If the exam papers are very tough, the overall cutoffs drop down.
Previous Year Trends: Students usually look at old cutoff rules to fill their forms, which keeps the trends similar.

In 2026, the demand for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science branches increased heavily compared to 2025. This caused the closing ranks for AI branches to climb to higher competitive levels.
Compared to 2024, the total number of students appearing for the exam grew larger in 2026. This extra rush caused the Computer Science cutoffs to close early in almost all top-tier NITs.
The number of available seats across newer IIITs in 2026 is higher than in 2023. Because of these extra seats, rank ranges have expanded for several technical institutes.
Most competitive branches: Computer Science Engineering and AI remain the hardest branches to secure.
Institutes with rising demand: Newer IITs like IIT Hyderabad are seeing faster closures.
Category-wise trend shifts: Reservation categories are showing tighter competitions in top 10 colleges.

Safe Choices: These are colleges where the student's rank is much better than the previous closing ranks. Admission is almost certain here.
Moderate Choices: These are colleges where the student's rank is very close to the old closing ranks. There is a balanced chance of getting a seat.
Dream Choices: These are top-tier colleges where the closing rank is slightly higher than the student's rank, but there is still a small hope of selection if seats remain empty.
