What are Opening and Closing Ranks in JoSAA?

Opening and Closing Ranks in JoSAA are the ranking systems for students to get admission in a particular college and course, depending on the category in a specific counselling round.

What is Opening Rank (OR)?

Opening Rank is the highest-ranked candidate who secured admission to a particular course, institute, category, and quota in a specific counselling round.

What is Closing Rank (CR)?

Closing Rank is the last rank at which admission was offered for a specific institute, branch, category, and quota combination.

These ranks serve as the official cutoff for admissions during each counselling round.

JoSAA Round 1 Cutoff 2026 Released

The official authorities have published the complete list of opening and closing ranks for the very first round of admissions. This list helps students understand the minimum and maximum ranks needed to secure a seat in a particular college.

The Round 1 cutoff list contains the following detailed information:

  • Institute-wise cutoff: The specific rank limits for every participating engineering college.

  • Branch-wise cutoff: The exact rank required for different courses like Computer Science or Mechanical Engineering.

  • Category-wise cutoff: Ranks are divided according to special student groups like General, OBC, SC, and ST.

  • Gender-neutral cutoff: General seats that are open for both boys and girls based purely on merit.

  • Female-only cutoff: Special seats kept aside only for girls to help them get into top engineering colleges.

  • Home State quota cutoff: Lower rank requirements for students who want to study in an NIT located in their own home state.

  • Other State quota cutoff: The rank requirements for students applying to NITs outside their home state.

Category-Wise JoSAA Cutoff 2026

The cutoff ranks are published separately for different student groups. It is very important to understand how these ranks are displayed:

  • Open Category: These ranks are displayed in the Common Rank List (CRL) format.

  • EWS Category: Ranks are shown using the specific Gen-EWS category rank list.

  • OBC-NCL Category: Ranks are shown using the official OBC category rank list.

  • SC Category: Cutoffs are listed using the Scheduled Caste category ranks.

  • ST Category: Cutoffs are listed using the Scheduled Tribe category ranks.

  • PwD Category: Persons with Disabilities cutoffs are calculated and displayed separately within their respective groups.

Important Note: Open ranks are always shown in CRL. EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, and ST ranks are shown in their respective category ranks. PwD cutoffs are displayed separately.

Home State vs Other State Cutoff in JoSAA

What is Home State Quota?

The Home State Quota is a special rule where 50% of the total seats in an NIT are kept reserved only for students who completed their 12th class exams in that same state.

What is Other State Quota?

The Other State Quota applies to the remaining 50% of the seats in an NIT. These seats are filled by students coming from all the other states and union territories of India.

Which Candidates Benefit More?

Home State candidates benefit much more because the closing ranks for the Home State quota are usually much lower. This means a student can get a good seat in their home NIT even with a higher rank, while an outside student would need a much better rank for the exact same seat. For example, at NIT Trichy or NIT Warangal, local state candidates secure seats at ranks where outside state options close much earlier.

Factors Affecting JoSAA Opening and Closing Rank 2026

The cutoff ranks change every year because of these six main reasons:

  1. Number of Candidates: If more students pass the JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams, the competition increases.

  2. Seat Availability: If colleges add new seats or new branches, the closing ranks can drop, making it easier to get a seat.

  3. Institute Popularity: Top colleges like IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi are always in high demand, so their closing ranks stay very low.

  4. Branch Demand: Currently, courses like CSE and AI are highly preferred, which makes their cutoffs very strict.

  5. Difficulty Level of JEE Main and JEE Advanced: If the exam papers are very tough, the overall cutoffs drop down.

  6. Previous Year Trends: Students usually look at old cutoff rules to fill their forms, which keeps the trends similar.

How to Check JoSAA Opening and Closing Rank 2026?

Candidates can easily check the rank list by following these clear directions:

  1. Visit the JoSAA official website at josaa.nic.in.

  2. Open the "OR-CR" (Opening and Closing Rank) section on the homepage.

  3. Select the Round Number (Choose Round 1).

  4. Choose the Institute Type (Select IIT, NIT, IIIT, or GFTI).

  5. Select the specific Institute Name from the dropdown menu.

  6. Select the preferred Programme or engineering branch.

  7. Choose the correct Category and Quota type.

  8. Click the Submit button.

  9. View the Opening and Closing Rank details on the screen.

JoSAA Opening and Closing Rank vs Previous Years

JoSAA 2026 vs 2025

In 2026, the demand for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science branches increased heavily compared to 2025. This caused the closing ranks for AI branches to climb to higher competitive levels.

JoSAA 2026 vs 2024

Compared to 2024, the total number of students appearing for the exam grew larger in 2026. This extra rush caused the Computer Science cutoffs to close early in almost all top-tier NITs.

JoSAA 2026 vs 2023

The number of available seats across newer IIITs in 2026 is higher than in 2023. Because of these extra seats, rank ranges have expanded for several technical institutes.

Analysis Points

  • Most competitive branches: Computer Science Engineering and AI remain the hardest branches to secure.

  • Institutes with rising demand: Newer IITs like IIT Hyderabad are seeing faster closures.

  • Category-wise trend shifts: Reservation categories are showing tighter competitions in top 10 colleges.

  • CSE cutoff movement: The closing ranks for CSE are shrinking at premium colleges, meaning students need higher marks than before.

How to Use JoSAA OR-CR for Choice Filling?

Students should use the official opening and closing ranks to divide their college choices into three smart groups:

  • Safe Choices: These are colleges where the student's rank is much better than the previous closing ranks. Admission is almost certain here.

  • Moderate Choices: These are colleges where the student's rank is very close to the old closing ranks. There is a balanced chance of getting a seat.

  • Dream Choices: These are top-tier colleges where the closing rank is slightly higher than the student's rank, but there is still a small hope of selection if seats remain empty.

Counselling Strategy: Candidates should compare their rank with the latest closing rank before locking preferences.

JoSAA 2026 Participating Institutes

The admission system manages seats across a massive network of engineering colleges. The total number of participating institutes includes:

  • 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)

  • 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs)

  • 26 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs)

  • IIEST Shibpur (Special esteemed institute)

  • 56 Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs)

In total, admissions are being conducted across 138 institutes through JoSAA 2026.
