What is Positive Marks in JEE Advanced?

JEE Advanced Result 2026 has been officially declared on June 1, 2026. Students who have appeared in the exam want to know what positive marks are in JEE Advanced. The positive marks in the JEE  Advanced exam are the marks scored by the students for the correctly answered questions. The authority has determined the JEE Advanced positive marking scheme for the students. It includes the marks awarded to the correctly answered questions in the paper 1 and paper 2 exams.

Positive Marks in JEE Advanced

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced is one of the toughest competitive exams for students who want to study engineering at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). To do well in this exam, it is important to understand how the grading works. Positive marks in JEE Advanced refer to the marks a student earns when they give the correct answer to a question.

Every year, the exam format changes slightly, but the basic idea of rewarding correct answers remains the same. When a student selects the right option or types the correct numerical value, they receive a plus score. Understanding this system helps students plan how to attempt the question paper without losing marks.

JEE Advanced Marking System Explained

The exam consists of two mandatory papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2. Both papers contain three subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The JEE Advanced marking system, explained simply, means looking at how points are given or taken away for different types of questions.

Unlike regular school exams, where every question has the same value, JEE Advanced has different sections. Some sections give more points, while others give fewer points. The total marks for the exam change almost every year, which is why students must read the instructions on the computer screen very carefully before starting the test.

JEE Advanced Scoring Pattern

The JEE Advanced scoring pattern is divided into various types of questions. Here are the common types of questions found in the exam:

  • Single Correct Option Questions: These questions have four options, and only one option is right. If a student chooses the correct option, they get full positive marks.

  • Multiple Correct Options Questions: These questions are tricky because one, two, three, or even all four options can be correct. To get full marks, a student must select all the correct options and no wrong ones.

  • Numerical Value Questions: For these questions, students have to type a number using a virtual keyboard. There are no choices given.

  • Matrix Match Questions: Students have to match items from one column to items in another column.

JEE Advanced Marking Scheme

The JEE Advanced Marking Scheme has been provided for the understanding of the students who appeared in the exam.

JEE Advanced Score Calculation Method

The JEE Advanced score calculation method follows a simple mathematical step for each subject:

{Subject Score} = {Total Positive Marks} - {Total Negative Marks}

The scores of Paper 1 and Paper 2 are added together to get the final total score. For example, if a student gets 50 marks in Physics in Paper 1 and 40 marks in Physics in Paper 2, their total Physics score will be 90 marks. This calculation is done separately for Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics to check if the student clears the individual subject cut-offs.

JEE Advanced Answer Marking Rules

The JEE Advanced answer marking rules state that once a student saves their answer on the computer, it is recorded for evaluation. Students can change their answers any number of times before the final exam timer runs out.

If a question is marked for "Review" and also answered, it will still be evaluated. If a question is only marked for "Review" but no answer is selected, it will be treated as unattempted, and the student will receive 0 marks.
