Important Concepts for JEE Questions on Work Energy and Power

Important Concepts for Work, Energy and Power JEE Main focuses on understanding how work, energy, and power relate to motion and forces. These concepts help in solving JEE Main physics work energy and power questions efficiently. Some of them are mentioned below:

Important Concepts for Work, Energy and Power JEE Main
Concept Explanation
Work Done by Constant Force W = F × s × cosθ
Work Done by Variable Force W = ∫F dx (area under F-x graph)
Kinetic Energy (KE) KE = 1/2 mv²
Potential Energy (PE) PE = mgh, Spring PE = 1/2 kx²
Work-Energy Theorem Net work = change in kinetic energy
Conservation of Mechanical Energy KE + PE = constant (no non-conservative forces)
Power (Instantaneous and Average) P = dW/dt, P = F·v
Collision and Energy Loss KE before ≠ KE after (inelastic)
Frictional Work W_friction = –μmg cosθ × distance
Potential Energy Curves Determines stability of equilibrium
Momentum–Energy Relationship p = √(2mKE)
Centre of Mass + Work Work affects KE of COM

Sample Work Power and Energy JEE Questions

The following are some commonly asked questions of JEE Main Physics work energy and power questions, explained in a step-by-step manner.

Question 1: A force acts on a particle along the x-axis such that F = 6x. Find the work done in moving the particle from x = 0 to x = 4 m.

Solution:

W = ∫ 6x dx from 0 to 4

W = 6 * (x^2 / 2)

W = 3 * (4^2)

W = 3 * 16 = 48 J

Question 2: A block of mass 2 kg starts from rest and slides down a frictionless incline that has an elevation of 5 m. Find the speed at the bottom.

Solution:

Initial PE = mgh = 2 * 9.8 * 5 = 98 J

Using work–energy theorem:

PE lost = KE gained = 98

1/2 mv^2 = 98

v^2 = 98

v ≈ 9.9 m/s

Question 3: A constant force of 20 N pulls a body at a velocity of 3 m/s. Find the power delivered.

Solution:

P = F × v = 20 × 3 = 60 W

Question 4: How much potential energy is stored in a spring with constant k = 200 N/m that has been compressed by 0.1 m?

Solution:

PE = 1/2 kx^2

PE = 1/2 * 200 * 0.1^2 = 1 J

Question 5: A body is shifted 5 m on a rough surface whose frictional force is 10 N. Find the work done.

Solution:

W = F × s

W = 10 × 5 = 50 J [negative work]
