FMGE Internship Guidelines Released by NMC
National Medical Commission (NMC) issued a circular outlining the guidelines for internships of Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs). The key points from the guidelines are as follows:
-
Internship Requirement: FMGs must complete a 12-month internship after passing the FMGE exam. This internship is necessary for obtaining registration with the NMC in India.
-
Extended Duration: In exceptional cases, as per NMC regulations, the FMGE internship can be extended to 24 months. Such extensions are granted under specific conditions.
-
Time Frame: Internships must be completed within two years of passing the FMGE exam. Failing to do so may lead to complications in the registration process.
-
Hospital/Institute Placement: The State Medical Council will assign FMGs to hospitals or institutes where they can complete their internship. These placements are determined based on availability and other factors.
-
No Internship Fees: Medical colleges and institutes are prohibited from charging any fees for the FMGE internship, ensuring equal opportunities for all eligible candidates.
-
Stipend: FMGs undertaking internships will receive a stipend equivalent to that of Indian medical interns. The stipend amount will follow the regulations set by the state government, ensuring fairness.
-
State Domicile: The NMC has instructed state medical councils not to restrict FMGs from interning at medical colleges based on their domicile status. FMGs are eligible to complete their internship at any medical college across any state or union territory (UT) in India, provided they meet the eligibility criteria.
