The CRMI must be completed within 2 years from the time of qualifying for the FMGE exam or NExT exam when applicable. The duration of the FMGE Internship is 1 year during which they learn about medical standards and clinical practice of the country to fill in the knowledge gap before getting the license to practice in India.

What is 2 Year Internship for FMGE?

The 2-Year Internship for FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) is a mandatory practical training period that foreign medical graduates must complete to practice medicine in India. This internship is designed to provide hands-on experience in various medical fields, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for the Indian healthcare system.
  • Duration : 2 years of practical training.
  • Eligibility : Candidates must pass the FMGE exam to begin the internship.
  • Training Areas : Interns gain experience in essential medical specialties, including General Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Psychiatry.
  • Objective : To equip foreign-trained doctors with the necessary skills and knowledge to deliver quality healthcare in India.
Successfully completing this internship is essential for obtaining full registration with the Medical Council of India (MCI) or respective state councils, enabling graduates to practice medicine legally in India.

FMGE Internship Guidelines Released by NMC

National Medical Commission (NMC) issued a circular outlining the guidelines for internships of Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs). The key points from the guidelines are as follows:

  • Internship Requirement: FMGs must complete a 12-month internship after passing the FMGE exam. This internship is necessary for obtaining registration with the NMC in India.

  • Extended Duration: In exceptional cases, as per NMC regulations, the FMGE internship can be extended to 24 months. Such extensions are granted under specific conditions.

  • Time Frame: Internships must be completed within two years of passing the FMGE exam. Failing to do so may lead to complications in the registration process.

  • Hospital/Institute Placement: The State Medical Council will assign FMGs to hospitals or institutes where they can complete their internship. These placements are determined based on availability and other factors.

  • No Internship Fees: Medical colleges and institutes are prohibited from charging any fees for the FMGE internship, ensuring equal opportunities for all eligible candidates.

  • Stipend: FMGs undertaking internships will receive a stipend equivalent to that of Indian medical interns. The stipend amount will follow the regulations set by the state government, ensuring fairness.

  • State Domicile: The NMC has instructed state medical councils not to restrict FMGs from interning at medical colleges based on their domicile status. FMGs are eligible to complete their internship at any medical college across any state or union territory (UT) in India, provided they meet the eligibility criteria.

FMGE Internship Stipend

The stipend for Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) during their internship is designed to ensure they are compensated for their services in line with Indian medical graduates. State Medical Councils play a crucial role in regulating stipend amounts and ensuring equivalent facilities for FMGs throughout their internship.
  • A stipend is a type of salary provided to medical graduates for the services they render to their respective hospitals during their internship.
  • There is no fixed stipend for the FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) Internship; however, per NMC (National Medical Commission) guidelines, State Medical Councils are required to ensure that foreign medical graduates receive a stipend equivalent to that of Indian medical graduates.
  • State Medical Councils must ensure that: No FMGE Internship fee is charged to foreign medical graduates. Foreign medical graduates receive all facilities and benefits that are equivalent to those provided to Indian medical graduates.
  • Currently, the stipend amount is determined by the appropriate state authority based on local regulations and standards.
  • For the two-year internship , the stipend is payable only during the second year , as the first year compensates for the missed clinical training that occurred during their MBBS course at foreign medical colleges.

One-Time Relaxation to Complete FMGE Internship

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced a one-time relaxation for Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) to complete their internships in India. This initiative allows FMGs to undertake their Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI) in validated hospitals , with approximately 650 hospitals , including non-teaching facilities, recognized across the country for this purpose. It’s important to note that this relaxation is a temporary measure, applicable for one year from the date of the circular, remaining valid until the day describe in notification . This provision specifically targets FMGs, ensuring they have the opportunity to fulfill their internship requirements within the stipulated time frame.
