Innovations in Diabetic Management - Emerging Technologies That Will Transform Treatment

Innovations in diabetic management: Diabetes is a common health problem worldwide, caused mainly by bad eating habits like too much sugar and processed foods. But with the new technology and medicine, we're improving at treating and preventing it.

Governments and groups like the World Health Organization are funding research to find even better ways to deal with diabetes.  Advances in medicine offer innovative treatments. Preventing diabetes is crucial to avoid complications like nerve, eye, and kidney damage, heart disease, and Alzheimer's.

Innovations in Diabetic Management Overview

Diabetes affects around 500 million people globally. There is an urgent need for new technologies to meet the needs of diabetic people for better management.
  • Less than 50% of people with diabetes meet glycemic targets.
  • Innovative models of diabetes care aim to improve medical outcomes patient experience, and reduce costs.
  • COVID-19 accelerated the implementation of alternative care models.
  • The Endocrine Society task force examined and promoted innovative care models for diabetes.
  • Challenges exist in widely adopting new care models.
  • Solutions are proposed to encourage innovation and ensure sustainability.

New Ways for Managing Diabetes

People with diabetes need medicine because their bodies can't make enough insulin. However, with the new discoveries, controlling the immune system could significantly improve the chances of treating them. The new ways to treat diabetes are mentioned below:

High-Tech Insulin Pump for Type 1 Diabetes

The FDA approved the iLet Bionic Pancreas, which Beta Bionics developed. It comprises the iLet ACE Pump, iLet Dosing Decision Software, and an integrated continuous glucose monitor. This system automates insulin dosing using an algorithm, eliminating the need for manually counting carbohydrates. This simplifies the management of type 1 diabetes for users. Further details about the high-tech insulin pump are described below:
  • The iLet Bionic Pancreas streamlines the insulin delivery process, making it more accessible for individuals managing diabetes.
  • Unlike traditional methods, which require users to calculate their carbohydrate intake, this system only requires the user's weight. The algorithm then adapts to the individual's insulin requirements over time.
  • The device learns from the user's body and adjusts insulin delivery accordingly without needing constant manual intervention.
  • This innovation is particularly beneficial for individuals who struggle with the complexities of managing insulin levels, offering them a breakthrough solution that simplifies their daily routine.

Teplizumaby Drug

Teplizumaby Drug can help prevent the onset of type 1 diabetes. It's not a complete cure, but it's effective in reducing the risk of developing type 1 diabetes, especially for those with higher risk factors. The various benefits of Teplizumap are listed below:
  • Teplizumab is given to those with signs that their body might start attacking insulin-making cells.
  • These individuals may not have full-blown diabetes yet, but they are at risk. Teplizumab can delay the onset of diabetes or prevent it altogether.
  • Delaying the onset of type 1 diabetes, especially in childhood, is highly beneficial for long-term health.

Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) in People With Type 2 Diabetes

CGMs, or "sensors," continuously monitor daily glucose levels. It is observed that many of the patients with type 2 diabetes have started using CGM technology over the past year. This adoption of CGM among individuals with type 2 diabetes signifies a growing recognition of its benefits in managing blood sugar levels and improving overall diabetes management. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) is becoming increasingly common among people with type 2 diabetes. Traditionally, CGM has been primarily used as a treatment for type 1 diabetes.

Immunotherapy Treatment

A significant discovery in treating diabetes is finding a way to stop the immune system from attacking the insulin-making cells. This is done with a treatment called immunotherapy. It's great because it can be specified to each person with diabetes, reduces the need for solid drugs that weaken the immune system, and has other sound effects. Usually, people need medicine because their bodies can't make enough insulin. However, with this new discovery, controlling the immune system could help treat Type 1 diabetes.

Innovations Coming in 2024 for Diabetes Management

In 2024, various innovations will be implemented to improve diabetes management. Some of them are mentioned below:
  • The trial results for new drugs targeting type 2 diabetes and obesity in 2024 will soon be released.
  • GLP-1 receptor activators will be used as potential advancements in treatment options.
  • The emergence of new medications, improved access, and a deeper understanding of weight loss mechanisms will be introduced.
  • There will be a focus on digital health and developing new care models.
  • The efforts aim to address disparities in diabetes prevalence and improve access to preventive measures and treatments.

Diabetes Drugs for Weight Loss Treatment

Diabetes drugs are found to be effective for weight loss, a significant medical development. The various benefits of diabetic medications for weight loss are mentioned below:
  • The SELECT trial demonstrated that the GLP-1 drug semaglutide reduces the risk of cardiovascular events in overweight patients without diabetes.
  • This trial highlights the importance of treating obesity as a disease that requires intervention.
  • Tirzepatide has shown promising results for weight loss.
  • The drug is expected to achieve over 20% average weight loss in treated patients.
  • Many diabetes drugs are now recognized for their ability to reduce cardiovascular events.

New Technologies for Diabetes Treatment

These technologies aim to improve how we understand, diagnose, and treat type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The new tools introduced to regulate blood sugar in people are mentioned below:
  • Islet Chip: Scientists are making a unique tool called an islet chip to study cells in the pancreas called islets. These cells, especially beta cells, are attacked in type 1 diabetes. The islet chip mimics how these cells work in the body and helps researchers understand the disease better. It could also test new treatments faster and cheaper.
  • Laser Blood Glucose Monitor: Researchers are creating a device to measure blood sugar without pricking the skin. Instead of using needles, it shines a laser on the skin and measures blood sugar levels. This device could make monitoring blood sugar easier and less painful for people with diabetes.
  • Wearable Patch: Researchers have created a wearable patch that monitors blood pressure and detects cardiovascular issues. This patch emits ultrasound waves and measures the diameter of pulsating blood vessels to track blood pressure. It has the potential to aid individuals with diabetes, who often face high blood pressure and heart problems. However, the device currently requires external wires for power and data processing, but efforts are underway to make it wireless.

Encouraging Younger Generations for  Proper Nutrition Plan

Extensive research has pointed out that the root cause of diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes, lies in the dietary habits of individuals, especially among younger generations. The consumption of fast food, processed meats, and sugar-laden beverages is the primary contributing factor to this health condition. Additionally, a lifestyle characterized by insufficient physical activity further accelerates the risk of developing diabetes. Consequently, the most effective strategy to prevent diabetes is encouraging healthier dietary patterns and promoting regular exercise, particularly among children. Educating youngsters about the importance of nutritious eating habits and encouraging them to engage in physical activities can significantly improve diabetes and help achieve better long-term health outcomes. The COVID-19 pandemic made us realize how much we need better ways to care for people with diabetes. It took healthcare everywhere and showed us that trying new ideas can help. But we still have more work to do to make these changes happen for everyone. We're almost there, where healthcare will be very different. Preparing for the NEET PG or INICET 2024  exam?
