The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is one of India’s most strictly regulated competitive exams. With the NTA introducing even more rigorous monitoring for 2026, including Aadhaar-based eKYC and live photo capture, the margin for error on exam day has shrunk to zero. One of the most common yet fatal mistakes an aspirant can make is appearing from a centre or seat not specifically allotted to them.
According to the Information Bulletin for NEET (UG) 2026, specifically under Chapter 14 (Unfair Means Practices & Breach of Examination Rules), appearing from a wrong centre is not just a "mistake"—it is a legal breach. The NTA defines "Unfair Means" as any activity that allows a candidate to gain an undue advantage or subvert the sanctity of the exam.
The primary consequence of appearing from a centre other than the one indicated on your Admit Card is the summary cancellation of your result. If a candidate is found to be sitting in a room or centre not assigned to them, their OMR sheet will not be evaluated. Even if the mistake was unintentional, the NTA does not entertain pleas for re-evaluation in such cases.
Under the updated 2026 guidelines, being booked under a UFM case can lead to:
A 3-Year Ban: You may be barred from appearing in any NTA-conducted examinations for up to three years.
Criminal Action: Under the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, the authorities can initiate criminal proceedings if the act is suspected to be part of a larger malpractice attempt or impersonation.
The NTA uses a computerized, human-intervention-free system to allot centres and seats. This arrangement is designed to:
Prevent Impersonation: Ensuring the person at the desk matches the Aadhaar-verified data.
Maintain Language Integrity: Test booklets are distributed based on the medium opted for; changing centres can lead to the wrong language paper being issued.
Audit Trail: Every seat is mapped to a specific OMR number to ensure a transparent result-declaration process.
To ensure you don’t fall into the trap of "wrong centre" violations, follow these steps:
Check the City Intimation Slip: Download this early (scheduled for release in late February/March 2026) to plan your travel.
Verify Admit Card Details: Your centre address, room number, and reporting time are final. Do not attempt to visit a different centre even if it is closer to your residence.
The 01:30 PM Rule: No candidate is permitted entry after 01:30 PM. Reaching late may cause panic, leading you to rush into the wrong hall.
Double-Check the Desk: Once inside, match your Roll Number with the number pasted on the desk. If there is a discrepancy, inform the invigilator immediately.
