The study of light and microscopic particles revealed several observations that could not be explained completely by classical Physics. Scientists discovered that light sometimes behaves like a wave and sometimes like a stream of particles, while moving particles, such as electrons, can also show wave-like properties.
Dual Nature of Matter and Radiation explains the Photoelectric Effect, Particle Nature of Radiation, and Wave Nature of Matter through important modern Physics concepts. It also introduces Einstein’s Photoelectric Theory and de Broglie’s Hypothesis, which became the foundation for understanding quantum behaviour at the atomic and subatomic levels.
The photoelectric effect refers to the emission of electrons from a metal surface when electromagnetic radiation of suitable frequency falls on it. Experiments performed by Hertz and Lenard shows that:
Electron emission depends on the frequency of the incident light
Emission occurs almost instantaneously
Increasing intensity increases the number of emitted electrons
Kinetic energy depends on frequency rather than intensity
These observations could not be explained using the classical wave theory of light.
Einstein explained the photoelectric effect by proposing that light consists of discrete packets of energy called Photons.
According to this theory:
Each photon carries energy proportional to frequency
One photon transfers its energy to one electron
Part of the energy is used to overcome the work function
Remaining energy appears as the kinetic energy of the emitted electron
Einstein’s photoelectric equation successfully explained experimental observations and established the particle nature of light.
Louis de Broglie proposed that moving particles also possess a wave nature. According to de Broglie’s hypothesis, every particle in motion is associated with a wavelength called matter wavelength.
The de Broglie relation connects wavelength with the momentum of a particle. This concept shows that wave-particle duality is not limited to light alone.
Matter waves become significant for microscopic particles such as electrons, while their effects are negligible for large macroscopic objects due to extremely small wavelengths.
The idea that both matter and radiation possess dual characteristics became one of the most important developments in modern Physics. Wave-particle duality helped explain:
Atomic structure
Electron behavior
Quantum mechanics foundations
Electron diffraction phenomena
These concepts changed the understanding of microscopic systems and laid the groundwork for modern electronic and quantum technologies.
Strong conceptual understanding and formula revision are important for preparing this unit well:
