NEET 2026 Toppers: 93% of Top Scorers

One of the most striking data points from the NEET (UG) 2026 result, declared by NTA on 16 July 2026, dismantles a long-standing myth in India's medical entrance ecosystem: that consistent toppers usually need one or more "drop years" to crack NEET.

The Data: First-Timers Dominate the Top Bracket

Among the 138 candidates who scored 690 marks or above out of 720 in NEET (UG) 2026, NTA's official data shows:

  • Over 93% appeared for NEET (UG) for the first time

  • 99% are between 17 and 19 years of age

  • These 138 top rankers are spread across 66 cities in the country

This means the overwhelming majority of India's highest scorers this year moved directly from Class 12 into a top NEET rank, without a repeat attempt.

Why This Matters for Class 11 and 12 Students

For lakhs of Class 11 and 12 students currently weighing whether to attempt NEET immediately after school or plan a drop year, this data is a strong signal: disciplined preparation during the regular two-year window is statistically associated with the highest scores, not necessarily additional attempt years.

Coaching institutes and parents often assume an extra year automatically improves scores. NTA's own numbers suggest otherwise — at least at the very top of the merit list.

The Age Profile of a NEET Topper

The 17–19 age concentration among top scorers also lines up with NTA's broader finding that the majority of top-performing candidates nationally are between 17 and 19 years of age — reinforcing that the exam continues to reward students who prepare on the standard school timeline.

What Should Aspirants Take Away?

  1. A first attempt, well-prepared, can realistically produce a top-100 all-India rank.

  2. Age and repeat attempts are not a prerequisite for a 690+ score.

  3. Early, structured preparation from Class 11 remains the most reliable predictor of a strong NEET outcome.
