NEET UG 2026 Re-Exam: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has released the exam pattern and marking scheme for the NEET UG 2026 re-examination, providing aspirants with clarity on the structure of one of India's largest undergraduate medical entrance tests. Reiterating its message of "One examination. One fair field," the agency said the balanced distribution of questions across Physics, Chemistry, and Biology is designed to help candidates approach the exam with confidence and a clear understanding of the format.
According to the information shared by NTA on X (formerly Twitter), the NEET UG 2026 exam will comprise 180 questions carrying a total of 720 marks. The subject-wise distribution remains unchanged, with Physics and Chemistry carrying equal weightage and Biology accounting for half of the total marks.
The entrance examination will consist of questions from three subjects:
Physics: 45 questions carrying 180 marks
Chemistry: 45 questions carrying 180 marks
Biology: 90 questions carrying 360 marks
This brings the total to 180 questions for 720 marks.
Biology continues to have the highest weightage in the examination, accounting for 50 per cent of the total marks. Candidates preparing for the re-exam should therefore ensure balanced preparation while dedicating adequate time to Biology, given its significant contribution to the overall score.
NTA has retained the existing marking pattern for the examination:
+4 marks for every correct answer
-1 mark for every incorrect answer
0 marks for questions left unanswered
The negative marking system makes accuracy crucial. Experts generally advise candidates to avoid random guessing and instead attempt questions only when they can eliminate incorrect options or are reasonably confident about the answer.
Another key feature highlighted by NTA is that candidates will be permitted to carry their test booklets home after the examination. This enables students to review their responses and compare them with answer keys released subsequently.
In its social media post, NTA stated:
"One examination. One fair field. NEET UG 2026 brings a balanced structure across Physics, Chemistry and Biology, helping candidates approach the examination with clarity and confidence."
Knowing the examination pattern and marking scheme is an essential part of NEET preparation. A clear understanding of the number of questions, subject-wise weightage, and the marking system helps candidates formulate an effective exam strategy, manage time efficiently, and minimise errors caused by negative marking.
As the NEET UG 2026 re-examination approaches, aspirants are advised to revise the syllabus thoroughly, take mock tests regularly, and familiarise themselves with the exam structure. A strategic approach, combined with conceptual clarity and practice, can help candidates maximise their scores in the highly competitive medical entrance examination.
