Types of Stamen

Stamens can be classified based on their structure and how they are arranged in the flower. The main types are:

• Monadelphous: In this type, all the stamens are fused together at their filaments to form a single bundle. This type of stamen arrangement is commonly seen in pea flowers (Pisum sativum).
• Diadelphous: In this arrangement, the stamens are divided into two bundles. This type is typically seen in bean flowers (Leguminosae family).
• Polyadelphous : Here, the stamens are arranged in several bundles, as observed in the citrus flowers.
• Adelphous: Stamens are partially fused at the filament region but not completely. This arrangement is observed in some species of the Solanaceae family.

Structure of Stamen

The stamen consists of two main parts:

• Anther: The anther is the part of the stamen that produces pollen grains . It is typically a bilobed structure and contains four pollen sacs in which the pollen develops. The anther is usually located at the tip of the filament and is responsible for releasing the pollen when it matures.
• Filament: The filament is a slender, stalk-like structure that supports the anther. It helps to position the anther in the ideal location for pollination , ensuring that the pollen can be transferred to the stigma of the female flower. The length of the filament can vary depending on the species and the flower's structure.

Functions of Stamen

The primary functions of the stamen are:

• Pollen Production : The anther produces pollen grains, which contain the male gametes (sperm cells). These pollen grains are crucial for fertilization to occur.
• Pollination : The stamen's position and structure help transfer pollen to the stigma of the female reproductive organ (pistil) or to other flowers, depending on the plant's pollination strategy. Pollination can occur through various agents such as wind, insects, and birds.
• Fertilization: Once the pollen reaches the stigma, the sperm cells travel through the style to reach the ovule. Fertilization occurs when one sperm cell fuses with the egg cell in the ovule, leading to seed formation.
