The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a critical clarification for Class 10 students regarding the new two-board exam system starting in 2026. As the first phase of board exams begins on February 17, 2026, the board has made it clear: the second exam is an opportunity, not an alternative.
Students who were planning to skip the February session to "prepare better" for May must reconsider, as strict eligibility rules are now in place.
CBSE has officially stated that appearing in the first board examination is compulsory. If a student fails to meet the minimum attendance criteria for the first phase, they lose their chance for the second phase entirely.
The 3-Subject Cutoff: Any student who misses three or more subjects in the first (February) examination will be barred from appearing in the second (May) examination.
Academic Year Loss: These students will be categorized under "Essential Repeat." They will not be allowed to take the second exam in May and must instead wait until February 2027 to reappear as an annual candidate.
No Exemptions: The board clarified that requests to skip the first exam due to "unavoidable reasons" will not be entertained.
The second examination is structured specifically for improvement and remediation. Students can only appear in the May session under the following categories:
| Eligibility for the Second Board Exam (May 2026) | |
| Category | Eligibility Criteria |
| Improvement | Students who passed the first exam but want to improve scores in up to 3 main subjects (Science, Maths, Social Science, or Languages). |
| Compartment | Students who failed in one or two subjects and were placed in the "Compartment" category. |
| Subject Replacement | Students who passed by replacing a failed subject with a vocational/skill subject. |
This reform is part of the CBSE Class 10 two-exam rule introduced under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 to reduce exam stress by providing a second chance.
Full Syllabus: Both the February and May examinations will cover the entire syllabus.
Best Score Policy: The final result will reflect the higher score achieved between the two attempts in each subject.
Internal Assessment: Internal assessments will be conducted only once (before the February exams). These marks will be carried forward for the second attempt.
With exams starting February 17, remember these strict CBSE Board Exams 2026 big changes in protocols:
Reporting Time: Entry into the exam center closes at 10:00 AM. No student will be allowed entry after this time for the 10:30 AM exam.
Section-wise Writing: In Science and Social Science, answers must be written in their respective sections (e.g., Physics, Chemistry, Biology). Mixing sections may lead to marks deduction.
Mandatory Uniform: Students must be in their full school uniform and carry their original admit cards.
Final Thought: The "Best of Two" system is a safety net, not a replacement. Ensure you sit for every paper this February to keep your May options open.
