CBSE Class 10 Board Second Exams 2026 will allow students to get another chance to improve their marks in the same academic year. Under the new system, students will first appear for the main board exam and later have the option to take an improvement exam in May to boost scores or clear compartment subjects.

CBSE Class 10 Board Second Exams 2026

Central Board of Secondary Education has introduced a two-phase board exam system for Class 10 starting from the 2026 academic session. This change is aimed at making board exams less stressful and more flexible for students. Instead of having only one chance in a year, students will now get an opportunity to improve their performance through a second exam. Many students and parents want to understand who can appear in this second board exam and how it will benefit them. The second exam is mainly designed for improvement and compartment cases, helping students enhance their results without losing an entire academic year.

CBSE Class 10 Board Second Exams 2026: Who Is Eligible for Exam?

The new exam system introduced by Central Board of Secondary Education will allow students to appear for two board exams in one academic year. The first exam will be the main board examination, while the second exam will be an optional opportunity for improvement. This step is expected to give students more flexibility and reduce the pressure of performing perfectly in a single exam attempt.

Key Highlights of CBSE Class 10 Two-Phase Exams 2026

Exam Schedule

  • First (Main) Exam: Begins February 17, 2026 and will continue until early March.

  • Second (Improvement) Exam: Expected to be conducted in May 2026.

This gap between the two exams gives students enough time to analyze their performance and prepare again if they wish to improve their scores.

Why Two Board Exams?

The decision is aligned with the recommendations of the National Education Policy 2020, which suggests making board exams more student-friendly and flexible. The policy encourages reforms that reduce stress and focus more on understanding concepts rather than memorization.

Through the two-exam system, CBSE aims to:

  • Reduce exam pressure among students

  • Provide two opportunities within the same academic year

  • Allow one main exam followed by an improvement attempt

  • Promote conceptual learning instead of rote learning

  • Reduce the heavy dependence on coaching

Overall, this change is expected to make the board exam system more balanced and supportive for students.

How the Two-Phase System Works

First Board Examination (Main Exam)

  • This exam is mandatory for all students.

  • It will be conducted in mid-February.

  • The entire syllabus will be included in this exam.

  • Results are expected to be declared in April 2026.

  • Students will be able to access their marks through DigiLocker and official CBSE platforms.

This exam will act as the primary attempt for all Class 10 students.

Second Board Examination (Improvement Exam)

  • This exam is optional.

  • It will be conducted in May 2026.

  • Students can appear to improve marks or clear compartment subjects.

  • Results are likely to be announced in June 2026.

  • The final pass certificate and merit certificate will be issued after the completion of this exam cycle.

This second opportunity ensures that students who want to perform better do not have to wait another year.

Eligibility for the Second Exam

Students will be allowed to appear in the second board exam under the following situations:

  • To improve marks in up to three subjects such as Science, Mathematics, Social Science, or Languages.

  • To clear compartment subjects if they did not pass in the first exam.

  • To appear for a combination of compartment and improvement subjects.

This flexibility will help students correct mistakes and aim for better scores in important subjects.

Important Rule:
Students who miss or fail in three or more subjects in the first board exam will be marked as Essential Repeat. Such students will need to appear for the board exam again in the next academic year instead of the second attempt in May.

Special Provisions for Certain Students

CBSE has also planned special arrangements for certain categories of students so that they do not face difficulties during exams. These include:

  • Students participating in sports events that clash with exam dates

  • Students from winter-bound schools where the academic calendar is different

  • CWSN (Children With Special Needs) students

All the facilities and relaxations available in the first exam will also be provided in the second exam.

Internal Assessment

Internal assessment will remain an important part of the overall evaluation process.

  • It will be conducted only once during the academic year.

  • The assessment will be completed before the first board exam.

  • The same internal assessment marks will be considered for both the main exam and the improvement exam.

This means students will not need to repeat internal assessments for the second attempt.
