The CBSE Class 12 Improvement Exam 2026 is a significant opportunity for students who cleared their boards but want a better score. The Central Board of Secondary Education has officially announced that the CBSE Class 12 Supplementary Exam 2026 — which also serves as the improvement examination — will be held on July 15, 2026, as a single-day examination.
The CBSE Class 12 Result 2026 was declared on May 13, 2026, recording an overall pass percentage of 85.20 per cent. Approximately 2.7 lakh students could not clear the board exams this year, and around 1,63,800 candidates have been placed in the Compartment category.
Students who passed but want to boost their aggregate — for college admissions, scholarship eligibility, or competitive exam cutoffs — can appear for the improvement exam under CBSE's official scheme.
The last date for schools to submit the List of Candidates (LOC) for the CBSE Class 12 Compartment/Improvement Exam 2026 was June 17, 2026. CBSE does not accept applications after this deadline in any form or through any mode.
The LOC submission window opened on June 2, 2026. Schools were required to submit the LOC online through the official CBSE portal at cbse.gov.in. The board issued a strict advisory: no application would be accepted after the last date.
Note: If you missed the June 17 deadline, you cannot apply for the improvement exam in this cycle. Keep checking cbse.gov.in for any official extension announcements.

CBSE has defined three categories of students who are eligible to appear for the supplementary examination:
1. Improvement Candidates (2026 Batch): Students who have already passed the CBSE Class 12 examination in 2026 but wish to improve their marks in one subject only.
2. Compartment Candidates (2026 Batch): Students from the 2026 exam cycle who have been placed in the Compartment category — meaning they failed in one or more subjects — are eligible to appear.
3. Compartment Candidates (2025 Batch) — Last Chance: Students who appeared in the CBSE Class 12 board exam in 2025 and were placed in the Compartment category. The board gives a maximum of three chances to clear the compartment examination, making this their final (third and last) opportunity.
Key eligibility rule for improvement candidates: Students must confirm their result shows "Pass" — only passed candidates are eligible for the improvement exam. Failed students must apply under the compartment category.
Improvement candidates can appear in one subject only in the supplementary exam. This is a strict CBSE rule — you cannot improve marks in more than one subject in a single improvement cycle.
The fee for CBSE Class 12 Compartment/Improvement Exam 2026 is ₹300 per theory subject plus ₹150 per practical subject for schools in India
| CBSE Class 12 Improvement Exam 2026 Fees | |
| Category | Fee Per Subject |
| Theory Subject (India) | ₹300 |
| Practical Subject (India) | ₹150 additional |
| Late Fee (if applicable) | ₹2,000 extra |
Payment must be made online via net banking, UPI, debit/credit cards only. Offline payments through demand draft, cheque, or money order are not accepted by CBSE.
Schools must submit the LOC online through the official CBSE portal at cbse.gov.in. No changes — including addition or deletion of names or subjects — are permitted after submission.
Step-by-step process for regular students:
Inform your school immediately that you wish to appear for the improvement exam
The school includes your name and chosen subject in the LOC
Fee is paid by the school on your behalf through the online CBSE portal
After successful LOC submission, CBSE generates admit cards. Schools download and distribute them to students around July 7, 2026.
Private candidates must follow these steps:
Visit the CBSE private candidate application portal
Select the "Improvement" category
Enter details from your previous Class 12 admit card and marksheet
Choose the subject you want to improve
Upload scanned photograph and signature
Pay the application fee online
Download and save the confirmation page for future reference
Previous year admit card with roll number and school number; passport-size photograph in JPG format (max 40 KB); scanned signature in JPG format (max 40 KB); marks statement of the main examination; medical certificate for PWD candidates; school leaving certificate or transfer certificate if applicable.
This is the single most important rule every improvement candidate must understand.
CBSE uses the "best of two marks" rule:
If the improvement exam score is higher — the new score is taken as final and reflects on the updated marksheet
If the improvement exam score is lower or equal — the original main exam score is retained with no negative impact
CBSE issues a fresh Statement of Marks showing the improved subject score. The overall percentage is recalculated accordingly. The updated marksheet is accepted by colleges and universities for admission purposes.
In short: you have nothing to lose by appearing — your score can only go up, never down.
Many students confuse the two. Here's a quick comparison:
| Improvement Exam vs Compartment Exam- What's the Difference? | ||
| Parameter | Improvement Exam | Compartment Exam |
| Who can apply | Passed students only | Students with compartment in 1–2 subjects |
| Subjects allowed | Only 1 subject | Up to 2 subjects |
| Result status | Pass retained; better score updated | Must clear to receive Pass certificate |
| Marks rule | Best of two applies | New marks replace old marks |
| 2025 batch eligibility | Not applicable | Third and final attempt |
The CBSE 12th Compartment Admit Card 2026 will be issued about 7–10 days before the compartment exam begins. Students can download their admit card from the official CBSE website by providing their application number, roll number, or login credentials
The admit card for the compartment exam will be released by the schools for regular students. Private candidates need to download their hall tickets online. No student will be allowed to write the exam without it.
CBSE Class 12 Improvement Exam 2026: Result Date
