GATE Score Calculations: With the GATE 2026 Provisional Answer Key and Response Sheets officially released by IIT Guwahati on February 22, 2026, candidates can now calculate their raw scores. This self-assessment is vital for planning your next steps for PSU recruitment or M.Tech admissions before the final results arrive on March 19, 2026.
Follow this precise guide to determine your GATE 2026 raw marks out of 100.
To start the calculation, you need two specific documents from the gate2026.iitg.ac.in portal:
Response Sheet: This displays the options you selected during the exam.
Provisional Answer Key: This provides the correct answers as verified by the organizing institute.
GATE 2026 uses three different question formats, each with unique scoring rules. It is essential to categorize your answers correctly to avoid calculation errors.
| GATE 2026 Marking Scheme | |||
| Question Type | Correct Answer | Incorrect Answer (1-Mark) | Incorrect Answer (2-Marks) |
| Multiple Choice (MCQ) | +1 or +2 | -0.33 (1/3) | -0.66 (2/3) |
| Multiple Select (MSQ) | +1 or +2 | 0 (No Negative) | 0 (No Negative) |
| Numerical Answer (NAT) | +1 or +2 | 0 (No Negative) | 0 (No Negative) |
Note on MSQs: There is no partial marking. You must select all correct choices and zero incorrect choices to get full marks. Even one missing or extra choice results in zero marks.
Use the following logic to compute your total marks:
1. Calculate Positive Marks:
(Number of Correct 1-mark questions × 1) + (Number of Correct 2-mark questions × 2)
2. Calculate Negative Marks (MCQs Only):
(Number of Incorrect 1-mark MCQs × 0.33) + (Number of Incorrect 2-mark MCQs × 0.66)
3. The Final Formula:
If your calculated marks don't match your expectations due to a potential error in the official answer key, you have the right to contest it.
Challenge Window: Available from February 25 to March 1, 2026 (Tentative).
Procedure: Log in to GOAPS, select the question, and provide a PDF of a standard textbook reference as proof.
Fee: ₹500 per question (Refunded if the challenge is upheld).
