The JEE Advanced 2026, the national-level entrance test for admission to undergraduate programmes at the Indian Institutes of Technology, will be conducted on May 17, 2026, with Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee serving as the organising institute this year.
Alongside the regular computer-based test (CBT) format, media reports indicate that a new adaptive testing concept may be explored through a pilot set of aptitude-based questions designed by Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. The proposal, currently discussed within the IIT Council and the Joint Admission Board, aims to evaluate candidates’ reasoning ability and conceptual understanding rather than rote memorisation.
If approved by IIT Roorkee, the pilot could mark one of the most significant JEE Advanced exam reforms in recent years and may influence the future structure of the IIT entrance exam.

The proposed model focuses on introducing adaptive testing in JEE Advanced, where question sets may adjust to evaluate a candidate’s conceptual reasoning and problem-solving skills.
Under the experimental framework:
A small set of aptitude-based questions may be introduced as a pilot test.
The questions are designed by IIT Kanpur, a key academic contributor to the proposal.
The initiative is being reviewed by the Joint Admission Board, which oversees JEE Advanced exam pattern decisions.
Experts say the move could gradually shift the IIT admission exam toward conceptual assessment and analytical thinking, aligning it with global testing models.
However, officials have clarified that any adaptive model would initially be experimental and not expected to drastically alter the scoring structure for 2026.

Education experts say introducing aptitude and reasoning tests could reshape how India’s most competitive engineering entrance exam evaluates talent.
The IIT Council’s ongoing discussions suggest a long-term goal of moving the exam toward deeper conceptual evaluation, potentially reducing dependence on rote preparation and heavy coaching.
If the IIT Kanpur pilot test is implemented successfully in JEE Advanced 2026, it could become a key milestone in the evolution of the IIT entrance examination system.
