JEE Main 2026 75% Rule Explained: Who Needs It, Who Doesn't, What Happens If You Don't Have It

JEE Main 2026 does not require 75% marks in Class 12 to appear in the exam. However, the rule becomes important during admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs through JoSAA counselling. Students must score 75% marks or be in the top 20 percentile of their board to be eligible for these institutes.

Every year, many students get confused about the 75% rule in JEE Main. A common question is whether scoring 75% marks in Class 12 is required to appear in the exam or not. For JEE Main 2026, it is important to understand that the rule is related to admission in institutes like NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs, not the eligibility to appear for the exam. Students can appear for JEE Main 2026 even if they score less than 75% in Class 12 board exams. However, the 75% criteria becomes important at the time of admission to certain colleges through JoSAA counselling.

What Is the 75% Rule in JEE Main?

The 75% rule is an eligibility condition that applies during the admission process after the JEE Main results are declared. According to this rule, candidates must either:

  • Score at least 75% marks in Class 12 board exams, or

  • Be among the top 20 percentile students of their respective board.

For SC/ST candidates, the required minimum marks are 65% instead of 75%. This rule ensures that students have performed well not only in the entrance exam but also in their board examinations.

This criteria mainly applies to admission into:

  • National Institutes of Technology (NITs)

  • Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs)

  • Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs)

Who Needs to Follow the 75% Rule?

Students who are planning to take admission in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs through JoSAA counselling must meet the 75% rule. Even if a candidate secures a very good rank in JEE Main, admission may not be possible if the required board percentage is not met.

This is why board exam performance still plays an important role for many aspirants.

Who Does Not Need the 75% Rule?

The 75% criteria is not required in the following cases:

  • Appearing in the JEE Main exam

  • Applying to many private engineering colleges

  • Institutes that offer admission primarily based on JEE Main rank or their own entrance tests

For example, several private universities conduct their own admission process, where the board percentage criteria may be different.

What Happens If You Score Less Than 75%?

If a student scores less than the required 75% marks in Class 12, it does not mean the end of opportunities. Students can still:

  • Appear for JEE Main

  • Apply to private engineering colleges

  • Appear for improvement exams

  • Explore other entrance exams

Many students choose to appear for board improvement exams to increase their marks and become eligible for JoSAA counselling later.

Students preparing for JEE Main 2026 should focus on both board exams and entrance exam preparation. Scoring well in Class 12 helps keep all admission options open. If your target is to study in NITs or IIITs, meeting the 75% criteria becomes very important.

Understanding this rule early can help students avoid confusion during counselling and make better academic decisions.
