The National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially set the stage for one of India’s most competitive medical entrance exams: NEET (UG) 2026. For the millions of students aiming for a seat in MBBS, BDS, or AYUSH courses, understanding the "blueprint" of the paper is the first step toward a successful score.
This year, while the core syllabus remains aligned with NMC guidelines, the NTA has maintained a strict structure to ensure a uniform assessment of skills in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
The examination will be conducted in an offline, pen-and-paper mode using OMR sheets. Candidates will face a total of 180 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), with the majority of marks concentrated in the Biology section.
| NEET UG 2026 Exam Pattern: A Subject-Wise Breakdown | |||
| Subject | Type of Questions | Number of Questions | Total Marks |
| Physics | MCQs (Single Correct Option) | 45 | 180 |
| Chemistry | MCQs (Single Correct Option) | 45 | 180 |
| Biology | Botany & Zoology combined | 90 | 360 |
| Total | All Compulsory | 180 | 720 |
Question Type: Every question is an objective-type MCQ with four options and a single correct answer.
Subject Weightage: Biology accounts for 50% of the total score, making it the most critical subject for boosting your rank.
Accuracy is the name of the game in NEET UG 2026. The NTA follows a strict marking scheme designed to reward knowledge and penalize random guessing.
Correct Answer: Candidates earn +4 marks for every right response.
Incorrect Answer: A penalty of -1 mark is applied for every wrong answer (Negative Marking).
Unanswered Questions: No marks are awarded or deducted (0 marks) for questions left blank.
Multiple Answers: If more than one option is shaded for a single question, it is treated as an incorrect response and results in a -1 mark penalty.
The NTA has confirmed that the NEET (UG) 2026 exam will take place on Sunday, May 3, 2026. Unlike previous years, where additional time was sometimes provided for reading, this session follows a sharp 3-hour window.
Exam Timing: 02:00 PM to 05:00 PM (Indian Standard Time).
Total Duration: 180 minutes (3 hours).
Time Management Tip: With 180 questions to answer in 180 minutes, you have exactly one minute per question. Successful candidates often aim to finish Biology in 45–60 minutes to save extra time for complex Physics and Chemistry numericals.
Reporting Time: Candidates must report to the centre well in advance (typically by 1:00 PM) to complete security checks and Aadhaar-based verification.
OMR Instructions: Only use a black or blue ballpoint pen to darken the circles.
Language Medium: The paper will be available in 13 languages, including Hindi, English, and several regional languages, based on your selection during the application process.
Aspiring doctors, take note: The application window is currently open until March 8, 2026. Ensure you complete your registration at neet.nta.nic.in and verify your identity through the new eKYC system to secure your seat for the May 3rd showdown.
