Why Was NEET UG 2026 Cancelled? — Background You Must Know

The NEET-UG 2026 examination was conducted on May 3 across 551 Indian cities and 14 overseas centres, with nearly 23 lakh candidates registered for the test. On May 12, NTA cancelled the examination amid allegations of a paper leak

The Rajasthan Special Operations Group (SOG) launched a detailed investigation and recovered a handwritten "suggestion paper" reportedly containing approximately 120 questions matching the actual NEET UG 2026 question paper, including around 90 Biology questions and 30 Chemistry questions.

The CBI, which is probing the case, has conducted searches across the country. So far, 13 accused have been arrested from Delhi, Jaipur, Gurugram, Nasik, Pune, Latur, and Ahilyanagar.

There is no need for candidates to register again. The details submitted in the previous application will remain valid for the re-examination

Unprecedented Security Measures for Re-NEET 2026

Given the scale of the controversy, the government has introduced robust security upgrades for the June 21 re-test:

  • The central government is planning to use the Indian Air Force (IAF) to securely transport question papers for the upcoming NEET-UG 2026 re-examination.
  • During discussions, officials explored the possibility of using defence logistics support to securely transport question papers from printing presses to examination centres across India, if the IAF is entrusted with airlifting confidential NEET question paper packets to various states and examination hubs.
  • The proposed plan involves airlift from printing presses to regional hubs, GPS-tracked locked boxes, and armed escorts for last-mile delivery. PMO approval is still pending.
  • Enhanced monitoring at examination centres and stricter identity verification for candidates

Important Instructions for Candidates

  • The city slip is NOT your admit card. Do not attempt to use it as hall ticket at the exam centre
  • The city slip is to inform candidates about the city where their examination centre will be located, helping them make travel and accommodation arrangements in advance
  • Candidates must log in using their original application number and password — no fresh registration is required
  • Once the city is allotted, city change requests are not entertained by NTA
  • Download the slip and keep a printed copy for reference until the admit card is released
  • NTA has advised candidates and parents to regularly visit the official websites for the latest announcements and examination updates
  • The Re-NEET exam is free for all previously registered candidates. No additional fee is required to appear in the re-test

Historically, candidates have been able to use their registered mobile number and email ID to retrieve forgotten login credentials through the NTA portal. This provision is expected to remain active for 2026 as well.

NEET UG will shift to Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode from 2027, as confirmed by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan — making the June 21, 2026, re-examination the last NEET conducted in the traditional pen-and-paper OMR format.
