The National Institute of Design (NID) will conduct the Design Aptitude Test (DAT) 2026 prelims on Sunday, 21 December 2025. The examination is being held for admission to the BDes and MDes programmes. Candidates appearing for the test are advised to be fully prepared and follow all prescribed exam-day guidelines, including last-minute instructions and strict do’s and don’ts.
Key points candidates should note before reaching the NID DAT test centre:
Candidates should revise core areas such as visual perception, creativity, design thinking and observational skills, which form an important part of the DAT prelims syllabus. Aspirants are also advised to practise sample papers released by NID on its official admissions website to understand the question pattern and exam format.
Applicants must check their admit cards carefully to ensure that personal details, test centre information and reporting time are correct. A printed copy of the admit card is mandatory, as digital copies will not be accepted. Candidates should also arrange their own stationery, including pencils, erasers and sharpeners, required for drawing and sketching sections. Adequate rest the night before the exam is recommended to maintain focus and creativity on the test day.
Candidates should reach the examination centre well before the reporting time mentioned on the admit card. They must carry a printed copy of the NID DAT 2026 admit card along with an original valid photo identity proof such as Aadhaar card, passport, voter ID, driving licence or PAN card. All instructions given by invigilators inside the examination hall must be followed strictly, and only permitted stationery should be used during the test.
Electronic devices, including mobile phones, smartwatches and calculators, are strictly prohibited inside the exam hall. Bags, books, notebooks, wallets and loose papers are also not allowed. Candidates should avoid carrying any unnecessary items, including food, unless medically required and permitted. Late entry will not be allowed once the reporting time is over, and any form of unfair practice or misconduct may lead to disqualification.
The DAT prelims is a qualifying stage for the DAT mains, making it a crucial step in the NID admission process. Candidates are advised to carefully read all instructions mentioned in the official BDes and MDes admission handbooks for the 2026-27 academic session. They should also keep checking the official NID admissions website for any last-minute updates and ensure timely reporting at the examination centre with all required documents.
