The GATE 2026 results are expected to be announced on 19th March 2026, and aspirants across India are eagerly waiting to check their scores. Along with the result, many candidates often ask whether the GATE cutoff 2026 will be released at the same time. Understanding this is crucial as the cutoff determines eligibility for M.Tech admissions, PSUs recruitment, and other opportunities.
Typically, GATE-organising institutes release qualifying cutoffs along with the result, though branch-specific admission cutoffs for IITs, NITs, and PSUs are announced separately by the respective institutions or via COAP and CCMT.
Qualifying Cutoff: Expected with the result on 19th March 2026.
Admission Cutoff: Announced later by participating institutes for M.Tech admissions.
Candidates can check their qualifying status immediately after the result and start planning for counselling and application processes.
GATE cutoffs are calculated based on:
Normalisation Process – Since some papers are conducted in multiple sessions, scores are normalised to ensure fairness.
Topper Score – The highest score in the paper influences the cutoff.
Number of Candidates Appeared – More candidates may slightly raise the cutoff
Difficulty Level of the Exam – Tougher papers usually lower the cutoff and vice versa.
Based on previous years’ trends, GATE cutoffs differ significantly across branches:
Top branches (CSE, ECE, EE, ME): 750–800+ for general category to qualify for top IITs.
Mid-demand branches (Civil, Chemical, Biomedical): 500–600 can be sufficient in some IITs or NITs.
Low-demand/niche branches (Textile, Mining, Ceramic): 400–500 may be enough for admission in new IITs or interdisciplinary programs.
Candidates should also consider category-based relaxation, as SC/ST/PwD candidates have lower qualifying marks.
