BSc Nursing Syllabus: Old Vs New

The Indian Nursing Council (INC) introduced a significant update in 2021, transitioning from a traditional year-wise system to a semester-wise system, mirroring the MBBS curriculum. Previously, nursing was a four-year course with an annual syllabus. 

Now, the entire BSc Nursing syllabus is divided into eight semesters, consistent with the MBBS structure.

BSc Nursing Semester-Wise Subjects

BSc Nursing is a 4-year undergraduate program, structured semester-wise to gradually develop theoretical knowledge alongside hands-on training, preparing students for professional nursing roles in hospitals, community healthcare, and research settings.

BSc Nursing First Semester

The First Semester is often considered the most difficult as it introduces foundational concepts and involves a significant transition for students. A primary challenge for Hindi-medium students is English proficiency, specifically writing in English and using technical terms (e.g., in Anatomy and Physiology). 

This semester is a crucial initial step in the nursing journey.

• Communicative English
  This subject is important for Hindi-medium students. It aims to build a strong English foundation in the first semester to prevent difficulties in subsequent semesters.

• Applied Anatomy & Physiology
  This subject is highly important.

• Applied Sociology & Psychology
  Students often neglect these subjects, leading to difficulties in writing exams and potential failures. Psychology forms the basis for later Psychiatric studies.

• Nursing Foundation Part One
  This is the most crucial component of the entire nursing curriculum. It involves learning numerous procedures, including observing them and understanding precautions. Direct patient practicals are not possible without prior learning.

BSc Nursing Second Semester

After the first semester, students gain proficiency in tackling university exams. This semester builds upon that learning, introducing new modules and subject timings.

• Nursing Foundation Part Two (including First Aid Module)
  The First Aid Module is a new addition to the curriculum, previously included in MBBS, and now integrated into nursing.

• Introduction to Community Health Nursing
  This subject is now included in the second semester, earlier than in the traditional system.

BSc Nursing Third Semester

This semester introduces major, often difficult subjects, and involves significant restructuring in the curriculum.

• Applied Microbiology (including Infection Control & Safety)
  Infection Control, traditionally taught under 'Fundamentals', is now integrated with Microbiology, as it is intrinsically a microbiology topic.

• Pharmacology
  Previously studied in the second year

• Pathology Part One

• Medical-Surgical Nursing (now known as Adult Health Nursing)
  This is a critically important subject. While the name has changed to "Adult Health Nursing," the core content remains the same as Medical-Surgical Nursing. It includes integrated pathophysiology. Historically, Medical-Surgical Nursing (MSN) and Pharmacology are subjects where students most frequently face 'back' (supplementary exams).

• Integrated Learning Approach (Third Semester)
  The third-semester curriculum is designed for integrated learning. Students will study diseases, their clinical features, signs, symptoms, and pathophysiology, concurrently with the pharmacology of the related body systems.

• Professionalism, Professional Values, Ethics (including Bioethics)

BSc Nursing Fourth Semester

This semester continues the curriculum from the third semester, introducing Part Two of major subjects and a new important subject.

• Pharmacology Part Two

• Pathology Part Two (including Genetics)
  Genetics is now specifically integrated into this part.

• Adult Health Nursing Part Two

• Educational Technology (formerly Nursing Education/CET)
  This subject is crucial for those aspiring to be nursing tutors or educators who will guide future students on procedures in hospitals.

BSc Nursing Fifth Semester

This is the most important semester for competitive exam preparation, as it introduces specialization subjects and the most challenging subject.

• Child Health Nursing (Pediatrics)
  A super-specialty subject.

• Mental Health Nursing (Psychiatric)
  A super-specialty subject.

• Nursing Management & Leadership

• Nursing Research & Statistics
  This is considered the most challenging subject in the entire nursing curriculum and is the one where students most frequently fail. It is entirely new content for many, involving research and statistics.

BSc Nursing Sixth Semester

This semester introduces further parts of specialty subjects and a highly practical subject.

• Child Health Nursing Part Two (Pediatrics)

• Mental Health Nursing Part Two (Psychiatric)

• Community Health Nursing (including Epidemiology)
  Epidemiology content often overlaps with Research.

• Obstetrics & Gynaecology (OBG) Part One
  This subject is strategically placed after Child Health Nursing, demonstrating a well-designed curriculum linkage. OBG is described as highly practical, focusing on procedures and labor processes. BSc Nursing Seventh Semester

This semester comprises only two subjects, which are individually very extensive and include practical components.

• Community Health Nursing Part Two
  This part is substantial, covering numerous programs and topics like Demography.

• Midwifery & Obstetrics (OBG) Part Two

BSc Nursing Eighth Semester: Internship

The curriculum now includes a dedicated Eighth Semester for Internship, aligning with the MBBS structure.
