American Mathematics Olympiad Important Topics

Across the different grade levels, the American Mathematics Olympiad syllabus moves from foundational mathematical concepts to more advanced problem-solving areas. Primary grades cover arithmetic and basic geometry, while higher grades add algebra, trigonometry, probability and other advanced mathematical concepts.

  • Arithmetic and Statistics

Arithmetic and Statistics form part of the syllabus from the primary levels. You will work with numerical concepts and statistical ideas appropriate to your grade.

  • Geometry and Mensuration

Geometry and Mensuration are included across the different grade groups. At higher levels, this area also extends to graphs and additional geometric concepts.

  • Algebra

Algebra is introduced more prominently from Grade 7 onwards. For Grades 5–6, algebra can also be used as one of the methods for solving word problems.

  • Pythagoras’ Theorem and Trigonometry

Pythagoras’ Theorem appears from Grade 8, while Trigonometry is included for Grades 9–10 and Grades 11–12.

  • Statistics and Probability

Statistics is included across several grade levels, while Statistics and Probability are specifically listed for Grades 9–10 and Grades 11–12.

  • Non-Routine Problem Solving

Non-routine problem solving is a key part of the syllabus across all listed grade groups. It includes:

  1. Number patterns

  2. Divisibility tests

  3. Spatial visualisation

  4. Logic problems

  5. Cryptarithms

  6. Simple cryptarithms for Grades 2–4

How to Prepare for the American Mathematics Olympiad 2026?

You can make your preparation more effective by following the syllabus according to your grade and giving enough time to both routine concepts and problem-solving.

  • Start with your grade-level topics: Cover the concepts listed for your grade before moving to more advanced questions.

  • Practise arithmetic regularly: Build accuracy and speed with calculations and numerical problems.

  • Work on word problems: Practise solving problems using the methods appropriate for your grade.

  • Strengthen problem-solving skills: Attempt number patterns, logic problems, divisibility questions and cryptarithms regularly.

  • Revise geometry: Practise diagrams, measurements, graphs and theorems included in your grade-level syllabus.

  • Attempt non-routine questions: Olympiad questions can require you to think beyond direct formulas, so include unfamiliar problems in your practice.

A strong preparation plan should go beyond revising formulas and routine sums. Give enough time to word problems, number patterns, divisibility, logic, spatial visualisation and cryptarithms along with your grade-level mathematical concepts. Regular practice can help you approach unfamiliar questions with greater confidence and improve your problem-solving ability for the Olympiad.
