APMO 2027

The Asian Pacific Mathematics Olympiad (APMO) is an international mathematics competition for school students from countries in the Pacific-Rim region. The competition is held every year. It provides students with an opportunity to work on challenging mathematical problems and take part in an international Olympiad activity while staying in their own country.

The APMO began in 1989. Its objectives include identifying and encouraging mathematically talented school students, promoting cooperation among students and teachers, and supporting Olympiad-level mathematics activities across participating countries.

The official APMO website currently provides information up to the 2026 edition. The official timeline and regulations do not yet list a separate 2027 schedule. Therefore, students preparing for APMO 2027 should use the established annual schedule as a reference and wait for the official announcement for the exact date and other 2027 details.

APMO 2027 Exam Date

The exact APMO 2027 exam date has not been published on the official APMO website as of August 2026.

The APMO follows a regular calendar. Under the current regulations, the examination is held on the second Monday of March in the afternoon for participating countries in the Americas and Oceania. It is held on the following Tuesday morning for participating countries in Asia and the Western Pacific.

For reference, the 2026 examination was held on Monday, March 9, in the afternoon for countries in Oceania and the Americas. It was held on Tuesday, March 10, in the morning for countries in Asia and the Western Pacific.

Students looking for the APMO exam date for 2027 should check the official APMO website and the relevant national Olympiad authority for the final schedule.

APMO Eligibility

The APMO eligibility criteria include age and educational requirements. Indian students must also meet the selection conditions set by the national Mathematical Olympiad programme.

  • Age Requirement: The contestant must be younger than 20 years of age on July 1 of the year in which the APMO is held.

  • Educational Requirement: The contestant must not have formally enrolled at a university or an equivalent post-secondary institution.

  • Country-Specific Criteria: Students must also meet the selection and participation requirements applicable in their respective countries.

  • Eligibility in India: APMO participation in India is coordinated through the national Mathematical Olympiad system. For APMO 2026, HBCSE listed INMO awardees and senior-batch students of the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp, subject to the applicable conditions.

  • Exam Information: HBCSE stated that eligible students for APMO 2026 received examination-related details through their registered email addresses.

  • APMO 2027 Eligibility: The eligibility conditions for APMO 2027 may be updated. You should check the official HBCSE notification for the latest eligibility and participation details.

APMO Registration

The APMO registration process is managed through participating countries rather than through a direct international application. For Indian students, participation is linked to the national Mathematical Olympiad programme.

  • Registration Process: APMO does not have a regular open registration process where every student applies directly to the international organising committee.

  • Country-Level Organisation: The competition is organised locally by the representative of each participating country. Any number of students may appear for the examination, but results of a maximum of 10 students per country can be submitted for official participation.

  • India Registration: In India, APMO participation is linked to the national Mathematical Olympiad programme. HBCSE provides information about eligible students and shares further examination details with them.

  • APMO 2027 Registration: You should check the official HBCSE notification for the APMO 2027 registration process, eligibility conditions, and participation details.

APMO Exam Pattern

The APMO exam pattern is based on a single written paper. The official regulations specify five questions to be solved in four hours. Each question carries seven marks. Therefore, the paper carries 35 marks in total.

The questions have varying levels of difficulty. Students are expected to develop mathematical arguments rather than select answers from given options.

The 2025 official APMO paper also stated that each problem was worth seven points and that the examination duration was four hours. It also specified that calculators were not allowed.

The paper is designed to assess how students approach unfamiliar mathematical problems. A complete solution requires clear reasoning and proper justification.

APMO Syllabus

There is no chapter-wise APMO syllabus published in the official regulations. The competition is based on Olympiad-style mathematical problem solving rather than a fixed school-board syllabus.

Students can understand the nature of the questions by studying the official APMO problem archive. The website provides problem statements and solutions for editions from 1989 onwards.

The problems can involve different areas of mathematics. These include topics such as geometry, number theory, algebra, combinatorics and inequalities. The exact combination and difficulty can vary from year to year.

For preparation, you can study earlier APMO papers and work through their solutions after attempting the problems yourself. You can also practise mathematical proofs and problems that require several steps of reasoning.

Since there is no fixed chapter-wise APMO syllabus, preparation should focus on developing problem-solving ability across different areas of Olympiad mathematics.

APMO Awards and Cut-Offs

APMO awards are determined using the scores and ranks of contestants. The regulations specify different conditions for Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards.

The official rules use the yearly mean score and standard deviation along with the student's rank within the country.

Award

Official criteria

Gold

Score at least mean + standard deviation and country rank 1

Silver

Score at least mean + one-third of standard deviation and country rank up to 3

Bronze

Score at least mean − one-third of standard deviation and country rank up to 7

Honourable Mention

Awarded to eligible contestants who meet the criteria decided for the year

Honourable Mentions may be given to students who do not receive another award but show creditable performance according to criteria determined for that edition. The regulations give examples such as scoring seven on at least one question or scoring five or six on at least two questions.

The cut-offs can change every year because they depend on the scores obtained in that edition.

For example, the 2025 Gold, Silver and Bronze cut-offs were 24, 18 and 12. In 2026, they were 22, 17 and 11.
