INChO Eligibility 2027: Age Limit, Class, Nationality & Selection Process

INChO Eligibility 2027 is determined by the eligibility rules of the Indian Olympiad Programme. The Indian National Chemistry Olympiad (INChO) is the Stage II Chemistry examination in the Science Olympiad Programme conducted under the coordination of the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE).

Under the regular selection pathway, students must appear for the National Standard Examination in Chemistry (NSEC) and qualify for the subsequent stage while meeting the prescribed eligibility conditions. Students must also satisfy requirements related to age, nationality, schooling, residency, Class 12 status and university admission.

Who Is Eligible for INChO 2027?

For the 2026–27 Science Olympiad Programme, candidates must satisfy all applicable eligibility conditions specified by HBCSE. 

INChO Age Limit 2027

Candidates must have been born between July 1, 2007, and June 30, 2012, with both dates inclusive.

Students whose date of birth falls outside this range do not meet the age requirement for the 2026–27 Science Olympiad cycle.

Educational Qualification

Students must be studying in Class 10, Class 11 or Class 12 at the time of enrolment.

Candidates must also not have passed or be scheduled to complete their Class 12 board examination before November 30, 2026.

Therefore, students who have already completed Class 12 before the prescribed date do not meet this eligibility condition.

INChO Nationality Requirement

Candidates must be eligible to hold an Indian passport.

HBCSE also states that, under the current court orders, OCI students are not eligible for selection to the Indian team for the International Olympiads. However, OCI students who satisfy the other eligibility conditions may be provisionally eligible through the earlier stages up to and including the Orientation-cum-Selection Camp (OCSC). This policy is subject to change based on further court or government orders.

INChO 2027 Study and Residency Requirement

Candidates must have been residing and studying in India since November 30, 2024, or earlier.

Alternatively, students must have been studying in an Indian school system since November 30, 2024, or earlier.

Candidates should verify this requirement carefully before considering themselves eligible for the Olympiad programme.

University Admission Requirement

Candidates must not have commenced or be planning to commence studies at a university or equivalent institution by June 1, 2027.

This condition applies to students who may be completing their school education and planning to begin undergraduate studies during the Olympiad cycle.

Can NSEJS Students Appear for INChO 2027?

No. Students appearing for the National Standard Examination in Junior Science (NSEJS) 2026 are not eligible for NSEC and the subsequent stages under the Science Olympiad eligibility rules.

Students should therefore carefully consider the applicable NSE before registering.

Is NSEC Qualification Required for INChO 2027?

Yes, under the regular selection pathway, students must appear for the National Standard Examination in Chemistry (NSEC) and qualify for the Stage II selection process to be considered for INChO.

The Science Olympiad Programme follows a multi-stage selection process. NSEC is the first-stage Chemistry examination, while INChO is the second-stage examination.

However, HBCSE provides an exception for candidates who have previously represented India at the International Olympiad in the respective subject. Such candidates may be permitted to skip the first-stage NSE and directly appear for the relevant INO, subject to the prescribed permission process.

INChO 2027 Selection Process

The regular selection pathway for INChO involves the following stages:

1. NSEC: Students appear for the National Standard Examination in Chemistry.

2. Selection for INChO: Students meeting the applicable selection criteria are included in the list of candidates selected for the Indian National Olympiad examinations.

3. HBCSE Registration: Selected students must complete the mandatory registration on the HBCSE website to obtain their INO admit cards.

4. INChO: Selected candidates appear for the Indian National Chemistry Olympiad.

5. Further Selection: Qualified students may progress to subsequent stages of the Olympiad programme, including the selection and training process for the International Chemistry Olympiad.

For the 2026–27 cycle, HBCSE states that the list of students selected for the INO examinations will be published by January 15, 2027 on the IAPT website. Selected students must then complete the mandatory HBCSE registration to obtain their INO admit cards.

Important INChO Eligibility Conditions

Candidates should keep the following conditions in mind before participating in the Science Olympiad Programme:

• The candidate must meet the prescribed date-of-birth requirement.

• The candidate must be studying in Class 10, 11 or 12 at the time of enrolment.

• The candidate must meet the nationality requirement.

• The candidate must satisfy the prescribed study and residency condition.

• The candidate must not have completed or be scheduled to complete Class 12 before the prescribed date.

• The candidate must not be appearing for NSEJS 2026.

• The candidate must not have commenced or be planning to commence university or equivalent studies by June 1, 2027.

• Under the regular pathway, the candidate must qualify through NSEC for consideration for INChO.

• Selected candidates must complete the mandatory HBCSE registration for the INO.

Candidates are responsible for checking whether they meet the eligibility requirements. If a candidate is found to be ineligible at a later stage, they may face disqualification from the programme.
