India won four Gold medals and one Silver medal at IOAA 2026. A total of 307 students from 64 countries took part in the international competition. The strong performance by all five Indian students showed India's success in astronomy and science education.
Experienced teachers and scientists guided the Indian students during the competition. HBCSE-TIFR helped with the students' training and preparation.
Team Leaders: Prof. Bhaswati Mookerjea from TIFR, Mumbai, and Prof. Sanved Kolekar from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bengaluru.
Scientific Observers: Prof. Abdul Rahoof K. A. from Sullamussalam Science College, Kerala, and Mr Adarsh Reddy Madur from Virtu Financial, Singapore.
IOAA Leadership: Prof. Aniket Sule from HBCSE-TIFR attended the event as the serving President of IOAA.
The 2026 edition was the largest IOAA event so far, with 307 students taking part. The competition tested students on astronomy theory, observation, and data analysis.
The marking pattern was divided into three main parts:
Theoretical Component: 50% of the total score
Observational Component: 25% of the total score
Data Analysis Component: 25% of the total score
A total of 159 medals were awarded at the competition. These included 51 Gold medals, 48 Silver medals, and 60 Bronze medals.
India has a strong record in international science competitions. The IOAA 2026 result added another important achievement to this record, with Indian students winning four Gold medals and one Silver medal.
Since India's participation in astronomy Olympiads began in 1999, Indian teams have won around 49% Gold, 35% Silver, and 13% Bronze medals across the editions.
The recent five-year record has also been strong. Indian students achieved a 100% medal success rate, with 64% Gold and 36% Silver medals.
In the 2026 senior international Olympiads in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, and Astronomy, Indian students won 16 Gold and 8 Silver medals. This gave India a 100% Gold or Silver medal record in these Olympiads for the first time since 1989.
