National Standard Examination in Astronomy

NSEA 2026: The National Standard Examination in Astronomy (NSEA) 2026 is the first stage of India's Astronomy Olympiad programme, conducted by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT). The NSEA 2026 centre registration has started from 1 August 2026 and will continue until 20 August 2026, while student enrolment will begin on 21 August 2026 through the official website iapt.org.in.

The NSEA 2026 examination will be conducted on Saturday, 21 November 2026, from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM. Students who qualify in NSEA become eligible for the Indian National Astronomy Olympiad (INAO) and subsequent stages leading to the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA).

NSEA Syllabus

NSEA Full Form 

The National Olympiad program follows a five-stage process, starting with an NSE examination held at nearly 1400 schools across the country and culminating with the international Olympiads at different corners of the world. NSEA stands for National Standard Examination in Astronomy.

NSEA is held to test the knowledge to assess the conceptual understanding, logical reasoning, laboratory skills, and above all, ability to apply problem-solving skills to novel situations, both theoretical and experimental and skills of students in Astronomy subject and acts as the first stage of the selection process for the International Olympiads in Astronomy.

Stages After NSEA

  • NSEA: The NSEA (National Standard Examination in Astronomy) is the first stage, Students enrolling must not have completed their 12th Board exams prior to 30 November 2026. 
  • INAO: The Indian National Astronomy Olympiad is the second stage of the exam, and only 300 qualified students who scored higher than others are allowed to compete.
  • OCSC: The Orientation cum Selection Camp selects the top 35 students from the merit list.
  • PDT: The Pre-Departure Training Camp offers intensive training to the top five students selected from OCSC.
  • IAO: In the final stage, students represent their school and country in the International Astronomy Olympiad on a global platform.

NSEA Registration 2026

The NSEA 2026 registration process is being conducted through the official IAPT website (https://www.iapt.org.in).

The registration process consists of two stages:

  • Centre Registration: 1 August to 20 August 2026
  • Student Enrolment: 21 August to 14 September 2026

Students can register:

  • Through their registered school or examination centre, or
  • Individually through the official IAPT online portal, as per the registration guidelines.

NSEA Application Fee 2026

Students must pay an application fee of ₹300 per subject to complete the NSEA 2026 registration.

  • Registration Fee: ₹300 per student
  • Payment Mode: Online or through the registered examination centre, as applicable
  • Registration fee is non-refundable.
  • No additional examination fee is charged for subsequent Olympiad stages after qualifying.

How to Apply for NSEA 2026

During registration, students can select their preferred language—either English or Hindi—for taking the exam. To obtain the NSEA 2026 registration form, follow these steps:

Centre Registration (Ongoing)

  1. Visit https://www.iapt.org.in.
  2. Register as a Centre In-charge or log in to an existing account.
  3. Fill in the institution details.
  4. Submit the registration form for verification.
  5. After approval, the centre can begin student enrolment.

Student Registration (Starts on 21 August 2026)

  1. Visit https://www.iapt.org.in.
  2. Complete the student enrolment between 21 August and 14 September 2026.
  3. Enter the required personal and academic details.
  4. Select the preferred examination language.
  5. Pay the ₹300 registration fee.
  6. Submit the application and download the confirmation page.
  7. Download the admit card once released by IAPT.

NSEA 2026 Eligibility Criteria

NSEA Exam is for Indian students who have a keen interest in Astronomy. Students at the higher secondary level take this exam at various exam centres are allocated by the organizing committee in various cities and towns to facilitate the examination process. Students must satisfy the NSEA 2026 eligibility criteria mentioned below:

Students must satisfy the following eligibility conditions to appear for NSEA 2026:

  • Must be eligible to hold an Indian passport.
  • Date of birth should be between 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2012 (both dates inclusive).
  • Must have been residing and studying in India since 30 November 2024 or earlier.
  • Must be studying in an Indian school system since 30 November 2024 or earlier.
  • Must not have completed or be scheduled to complete Class XII Board Examination before 30 November 2026.
  • Must not have commenced or plan to commence university studies before 1 June 2027.
  • Candidates appearing for NSEJS 2026 are not eligible to appear for NSEA 2026.

NSEA 2026 Syllabus

NSEA 2026 Syllabus is broadly equivalent to senior secondary level (up to and including Class XII) of CBSE. There will be greater emphasis on Physics, Mathematics and elementary Astronomy. Any in-depth knowledge of astronomy is not required.
However, basic familiarity with astronomical terminology, objects and phenomena, as can be acquired through an interest in astronomy (reading popular books / listening to popular lectures etc.), is expected.
